After a close battle early in the event, Phil Turner/Owen Dodd emerged as clear winners of Welsh Border CC’s Breidden Road Rally. This was the first time the Welshpool based event had run in ten years and the 75 crews tackled a 150 mile route.

Breidden Road Rally 2004
Winners: Phil Turner/Owen Dodd (Suzuki Swift)

Turner/Owen were fastest over the first section but Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Brynmor Pierce were only three seconds behind. The Golf crew took two seconds back on the next test, to put them one second off the lead, and then were 17 seconds quicker than the Suzuki pairing on the third to move to the front of the field. However Roberts/Pierce went out shortly afterwards with a broken gearbox on their Golf.

The leaders at Petrol were John Davies/Neil Bevan, they were six seconds ahead of Turner/Dodd, but a time consuming two minute wrong slot by them, and a charge by Turner, took the little Suzuki Swift to the winners podium. At the end they were a minute ahead of Mark 'GT' Roberts/Dnny Harris (VW Golf GTi). Davies/Bevan fell to eighth place at the Finish.

Third place at Petrol, 20 seconds off the lead, was held by Andy Sheppard/Justin Brooks, but they lost six minutes with a wrong slot in the second half and fell to ninth in the final classification. Gareth 'Shonkey' Jones/Andy Oakes also lost time with a wrong slot and then went further behind when they picked up a puncture.

Dennis Quinn/Paul Holmberg (Ford Escort) finished in third, giving the driver maximum Welsh Championship points.

Glyn Price/Huw Jones, would have been third, but picked up a fail for booking in early at MC 0, the route hand out control. Top seeds 'Mad' Mick Jones/Ian Oakey (Ford Escort) had a power surge from the alternator which blew all the fuses in their car.

Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies and Elgan Jones/Byron Jones picked up fails at the first Passage Control of the night. The control diagram had been altered at the last moment and an amendment was issued. Both crews signed the amendment, but failed to pick up the new diagram. They then got a wrong approach at the control.

A number of crews had a short rally, crashing on the opening section. Huw Myfyr/Gwawr Hughes (VW Golf) and Jason Hardy/Alan Jôs (VW Golf) both put their cars through the same gate, while Michael Pedley/David Pedley rolled their Escort into retirement.

It turned out to be a treacherous night; Tony Gush/Gareth Price, Mick Monaghan/Iain Tullie and Roger Hicks/Nick Darkin all ended their event after contact with the scenery. Meanwhile Derwyn Evans/Phil Clarke retired their Nova with a failed fuel pump.

Semi-Experts Neil Roberts/Dale Furniss and Novices Peter Roberts/Wyn Roberts both won their classes comfortably.
