Rali Bro Caron 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One. Richard Lewis/Philip Pugh confirmed their status as pre-season favourites for the Welsh Championship by taking their Toyota Corolla to victory on Lampeter & District Motor Club's Rali Bro Caron. However it wasn't a clear cut victory as less than twenty seconds covered the top three places and other crews, who could have been in with a shout, fell foul of the event's only passage board.

Moonbeam Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two. Richard Lewis/Philip Pugh made it two wins out of two when they took their Toyota Corolla to victory on the Telford Motor Auctions Moonbeam Rally. They succeeded despite losing twenty minutes when they got stuck on a white halfway through the event.

Red Dragon Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three. A rally route using some of the classic lanes of North Pembrokeshire wasn't enough to split the Sunbeam of Alan Williams/Andy Bowen and the Toyota of Tony Davies/Ieaun Thomas on Port Talbot MC's Red Dragon Rally. Both crews were clean over the twelve sections of the 140 mile event.

Greenleaves Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Four. Dennis Quinn/Nick Darkin scored a comfortable victory on Sixty & Worcestershire MC's Greenleaves Road Rally. Their Ford Escort triumphed after a 126 mile route in the maze of lanes in the regions surrounding Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye and Brecon. This was their second win on the event in three years.

Night Owl Rally 1996
Graham Evans/Ian Mills took their Manta to a close fought victory on Aberyswyth MC's Packaging Plus Night Owl Rally. They emerged at the front after what had been a four way battle for the lead for most of the event. By the start of the penultimate selective the top four were covered by less than a minute. It was to prove a decisive section; it took in thirteen miles over Pendam.

Pacemaker Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Five. Dennis Quinn and Nick Darkin took a second consecutive Welsh Championship win on Knighton Motor Club's Presteigne Tyre Services Pacemaker Rally. However their margin of victory couldn't have been smaller; after a route that took in 110 miles of Welsh border lanes Wyn Jones/Phil Clark were only one second behind at the finish. These crews survived a night of torrential rain, and at times even snow, while other possible challengers exited the rally after off road excursions.

PK Memorial Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Six. The Dovey Valley MC crew of Richard Lewis/Philip Pugh regained their early season form when they repeated their 1995 victory on Bala MC's Polyproof PK Memorial Rally. As in the 2005 event the runners up were Ewen Davies/Owen Dodd. However, unlike twelve months previously, when both had cleaned the whole route and the result was decided on engine capacity, in 1996 both crews dropped time.

Eagle Road Rally 1996
Having won Newtown and District AC's 1994 Holrus Rally with Colin Bound, Shaun O'Gorman navigated Colin's brother Alun to victory on the same club's Eagle Rally. They stamped their authority on the event by cleaning the first half and maintained the advantage in the second to win by three minute from Cyril Crook/Chris Ware, thus depriving the Welsh Border crew of a hat trick of victories on the event.

Classic Lanes Road Rally 1996
After a two year break Welsh Border Car Club once again ran the club's only road rally of the season, the Cambrian Autoparts Classic Lanes. Of the 120 mile route, eight crews cleaned all but one section, the remaining five mile tie breaker was the only plot and bash segment of the night and saw the Renault 11 Turbo of John Jones/Chris Rowlands fastest.

Suzanne Crowley Memorial Rally 1996
Elgan Jones/Deian Rees took an impressive victory in their Astra on Barcud MC's Suzanne Crowley Memorial Rally; this was the second year in succession that Rees had taken first place after navigating Hefin Lewis to the winner's spot in 1995. The only real challenge came from the Welsh Border CC Sunbeam of Richard Roe/Chris Ware, they might have run the winner's close if they hadn't retraced their route at one point to try and find a non-existent code board.

Valley Service Rally 1996
Geraint Davies/Emyr Jones emerged as winners of Llandysul MC's Valley Services Rally, the seventh round of the WAMC Road Rally championship. Their victory came after a steady run which saw them finish three minutes clear of their nearest rivals, Elgan Jones/Byron Jones. There was controversy before the start when championship hopefuls and the winners of three previous rounds, Richard Lewis/Phil Pugh, found that their Corolla, along with that of Peter Zjalic, failed scrutineering.

Rali Bro Cader 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven. Cyril Crook/Chris Ware survived to be declared the winners of the seventh and arguably one of the toughest rounds of the Welsh Road Rally Championship of the year. Their Sunbeam led home only 39 of the original 71 starters; of these finishers only five were fail free.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eight. John Evans/Eurig Evans emerged as winners of Amman & District MC's Rali Mynydd Du on a night that would have made Noah think twice before venturing out. Competitors were met with a night of rain, wind and fog which made it hard work for the valiant marshals but meant that competitors dropped time on most of the event's eight sections.

Mel Harries Memorial Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Nine. Baron Glaze/Dave Pitchford put their Welsh Championship campaign back on track as they took victory on the Mel Harries Memorial Rally. However the event was notable for a row that erupted at the Finish where three of the leading crews were given large penalties for booking out of the petrol halt early. The competitors involved disputed the decision and the matter was taken to an RAC MSA tribunal. That hearing upheld the penalties and the original results stood.

Malky Rally 1996
Bob Gibbons/Stuart Cardell took their Escort to victory on Blackwood & District's Malky Rally on a night of atrocious weather, where heavy rain and fog hampered the competitors and made life miserable for the brave marshals. Clerk of the Course, Byron Jones, laid out a demanding route starting and finishing at the club's home town but in between taking in the sodden lanes of south east Powys and northern Gwent.

Rali Cilwendeg 1996
Mark Williams/Rob Richardson made it two Rali Cilwendeg victories in a row as they repeated their 1995 success on Teifi Valley MC's clasic road rally. On a night of very slippery conditions in the lanes of Carmarthenshire, they kept their ex-Ron Beecroft Escort on the road while a large number of their rivals retired. At the finish they were almost two minutes clear of their nearest opposition, the Peugeot 205 of Alan Gaunt/Maurice Leach.

Peak Revs Rally 1996
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Ten. Baron Glaze/Dave Pitchford took their second successive Welsh Road Rally Championship victory when they won Ludlow Castle MC's Peak Revs Rally. This result rekindled their title hopes which two rallies previously had looked lost. Their position was improved even further when their only rivals for the Championship, Wyn Jones/Phil Clarke, lost 5 minutes after an off; they struggled home in 28th place. Glaze now needed to finish in the top four on the championship's last round, the Holrus, to have a chance of denying Jones the driver's title, while in the navigator's table Pitchford led Clarke by three points.

Holrus '96 Road Rally
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eleven. Richard Lewis/Phil Pugh took victory on Newtown AC's Holrus Rally to make it four wins out of the eleven rounds of the Welsh Road Rally Championship, however this still didn't put them in the hunt for the series win. This was battled out between Wyn Jones/Phil Clarke and Baron Glaze/Dave Pitchford; Jones led the drivers table prior to the Holrus, while Pitchford was top navigator, however neither had a decisive lead.

Rali Bro Dyfi 1997
A start number of thirteen proved no obstacle for Clive Williams/Patrick Walsh as they took their road standard Fiesta 1.3 to victory on Dovey Valley Motor Club's Rali Bro Dyfi. The only crew that came close to their pace was the Toyota Corolla of Geraint Davies/Emyr Jones, they were almost a minute and a half behind at the finish but this was six minutes clear of the rest of the field.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One. Having won the Starlight Rally in January as a driver Maurice Leach navigated Alan Gaunt to victory on Lampeter MC's Rali Bro Caron. The Peugeot 205 crew completed the 140 mile event without incurring any penalty despite the demanding nature of the route. They were followed home by 1996 Welsh Road Rally Champions, Wyn 'Slim' Jones and Phil Clark, who dropped only 12 seconds over the night.

Moonbeam Rally 1997
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two. Kevin Ikin and Martin Saunders took a close fought victory on Telford AC's Moonbeam Rally, thus giving Ikin his second win on the event, he'd won as a navigator in 1991. Only 14 seconds behind the winners were Dennis Quinn/Andrew Thomson, they had led at halfway but dropped over a minute in the second half after searching for a slot that was initially hidden by a parked car.

Red Dragon Rally 1997
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three. Pete Cotton/Dave Pitchford put a miserable start to the 1997 season to one side as they took a dominant victory on Port Talbot MC's Red Dragon Rally. The crew's previous outings earlier in the year had netted two non-finishes and one 21st overall, however in the Pembrokeshire lanes it was their turn to have a clear run as other crews hit problems or made mistakes.

Harlech & District MC's seeding proved very accurate as 1996 winners Gwynfor Jones/Alan Jôs repeated their success on the Rali Llyn; they were followed home by Car 2, the Sunbeam of Dave Jones/Baz Green. The tough nature of the event was proven by the fact that these two were the only crews fail free at the end.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Four. Paul Holmberg/Ian Vale repeated their 1994 victory by winning the Greenleaves Rally. They achieved this despite losing almost twelve minutes on the event's one section timed to the second. Luckily for them everyone else either had greater difficulty with the same section or picked up fails for silly errors.

Border 100 Rally 1997
Phil Turner/Owen Dodd took a comfortable win on Welsh Border CC's Border 100 Road Rally. Turner/Dodd were the class of the field all night, their only hinderance being the lack of an effective handbrake on the tight junctions. Derwyn Evans, a road rally star of the Eighties, made a return parternered by Alan Lovett, he had been expected to challenge Turner for victory.

Rali Bro Teifi 1997
The joint Clerk of Courses of Teifi Valley Motor Club's Cilwendeg Rally, Steve Davies and Dyfan Davies, took their Golf GTi to victory on the club's other road rally, the Rali Bro Teifi. It was a well judged run. The entry was soon down by one when Rali Bro Caron winners, Alan Gaunt/Maurice Leach, withdrew after missing a secret check on the run out. Kevin Lewis/Dylan Evans were also early retirements when they rolled their Golf on the second section.

Night Owl Rally 1997
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Five. Elgan and Byron Jones, in their Astra GTE, won the 1997 Night Owl Rally, the fifth round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship. The Aberyswyth Motor Club organised event proved to be a tough test of competitors, this became evident by the petrol halt when 21 of the 63 starters were found to be OTL, these included a number of the expected front runners.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Six. For a number of events Peter Zjalic/Richard Preece have been threatening to achieve a top three finish and on this promise was more than fulfilled when they took victory on the Pacemaker Rally, Round Six of both the Welsh and West Midlands Road Rally Championships. The rally was decided on the second and third sections, which were the only ones on which the eventual top finishers dropped time.

Mid Wales Stages 1997
After a series of problematic events, Andy Burton brought his unique Peugeot 306R4 for a test session on the Mid Wales Stages and claimed the wild hybrid’s first victory. Local hero Dave Humphreys was the pre-event favourite, having won the rally for the past three years, but he was immediately beset by clutch problems on his Escort Cosworth on the opening stage.

Cyril Crook/Neil Spiers were the fastest crew over the 125 mile route of Severn Valley MC's Novice Road Rally on Saturday night. However as Experts they weren't eligible for overall awards. Instead the official event winners were the leading Semi-Expert crew of Gavin Lewis/Jon Simcox-Bird, they brought their Cavalier home two minutes ahead of Richard Howells/Ben Innes' Escort.

PK Memorial Rally 1997
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven. Graham Evans/Ian Mills took their Toyota Corolla to a win on a hard fought and demanding PK Memorial Rally. Competition opened with a 30 mile 'Le Jog' style regularity section, this used the roads in Coed-y-Brenin and the Dolgellau Maze. This was followed by four plot 'n bash standard sections, one of which, in the area to the south of Clocaneog Forest, was almost 50 miles in length.

Eagle Road Rally 1997
Tony Davies/Ieaun Thomas held on for victory on the Eagle Road Rally in Mid Wales despite an engine that was going sick and a late charge from pre-event favourites Cyril Crook/Chris Ware. The event was 100% pre-plot, the first time that the Eagle had used the format since the Targa Timing era, it compensated for this by having a large number of time controls in its 98 mile route. With so many controls crews had to be on their toes as any error would quickly be penalised with time penalties.

The last minute partnership of Alan Gaunt and Eurig Evans proved a success as the pair, who started at Car 20, took their Peugeot 205 to victory on Barcud MC's Suzanne Crowley Memorial Rally. With a pre-plot route there were over twenty crews still clear of penalty at the halfway halt, however there was to be a short plot and bash tie decider early in the second half.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eight. Local rally spares supplier Gareth Lloyd, partnered by Dorian Evans, achieved a comfortable victory on Llandysul MC's Valley Services Road Rally over four minutes clear of their nearest challenger. The Welsh Championship round proved once again to be a tough test for the competitors - of the 75 starters only 35 made it to the finish.

Classic Lanes Road Rally 1997
Welsh Border CC ran their second road rally of the year and the result was the same as that of the first, that is a win for Phil Turner and Owen Dodd in their Toyota Corolla. There were problems only a few miles into the event as the top seeds and 1996 winners, John Jones/Chris Rowlands, got their Renault 11 Turbo stuck on a white. The rest of the field then had difficulty passing them.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Nine. Kevin Ikin/Rob Jones took their second victory of the year on the Rali Bro Cader. It proved to be an event which had a long list of pontential victors, however bad luck intervened in a large number of cases. Geraint Davies/Sarah Gluyas, despite the loss of fourth and fifth gears on their Corolla, were leading at Petrol but retired soon afterwards when the car's petrol tank broke loose.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Ten. The Semi-Expert crew of Gareth Jones/Iestyn ap Dafydd emerged as the surprise winners of Amman & District Motor Club's Rali Mynydd Du. The tenth round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship ended in confusion as it became clear that most competitors had misunderstood the regulations regarding Intermediate Time Controls. This resulted in only five crews being fail free at the Finish and many top runners finishing well down the order.

Dafydd Richards Memorial Rali Dyffryn Aeron 1997
Melvyn Evans/Dorian Evans took a dominant victory in their two-litre Escort on Lampeter MC's first running of the Rali Dyffryn Aeron. The 100 mile route used the maze of lanes between Aberaeron and Lampeter to fully tests the entry of 60 crews.

Having taken their maiden victory on the previous month's Rali Mynydd Ddu, Gareth Jones/Iestyn ap Daffydd made it two out of two by winning their home club's Malky Rally. Only 19 of the 45 starters made it to the finish of the 140 mile route which used the tight lanes of Gwent and southern Powys.

After 150 miles of the most demanding road rally in Wales only two seconds separated the top two crews at the finish of the Cilwendeg. What made the result even more amazing was that the two drivers involved were brothers and that it was the comparatively inexperienced Gwyndaf Lloyd who pulled off the victory from multi-event winner Gareth Lloyd. It is an event that all road rallyists in the Principality want to win and on this ocassion many came close to achieving this ambition but saw victory snatched from them.

Bill Bengry Memorial Peak Revs Rally 1997
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eleven. After returning to road rallying after a break of several years Andy Sheppard/Mike Hart had put in some impressive performances in the previous few months, these were now crowned by victory on Ludlow Castle MC's Peak Revs Rally. Baron Glaze/Pete Davies were second, a result that was enough to clinch for them the 1997 Welsh Championship.

Holrus '97 Road Rally
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Twelve Graham Evans/Ian Mills used their extensive local knowledge to good affect to take victory on their home club's Holrus Road Rally. The Newtown & District AC event was the final round of both the Welsh and West Midlands Championships and took crews through 110 miles of slippery lanes in Mid-Wales. The organisers had done well to find a challenging route after their available territory had been severely restricted by two national events, the RAC Rally and the Le JOG, running in close proximity.

JJ Brown Memorial 1997
Bryan Glass threw off a reputation as a perennial non-finisher to win Caernarvonshire & Anglesey MC's JJ Brown Memorial Road Rally. Glass, partnered by Richard Parry, managed to complete the route without incurring any penalty, a result which gave them a two minute winning margin over the Escort of Tudor Morris/Gerallt Davies, the only other crew to finish fail free.

Mel Harries Memorial 1997
Having taken his first ever rally victory two weeks previously on the Witches Brew, Toby Adams made it two in a row as he and navigator Nigel Nelson won the Mel Harris Memorial Rally in South Wales. Gareth Lloyd/Dorian Evans were the crew with least time penalties at the end but picked up a fail after missing to get a signature for the code board at PC37.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One Hywel Davies made a triumphant return to the driver's seat when he and Huw Lewis took victory on Dovey Valley MC's Rali Bro Dyfi. Davies, a leading road rallyist of the Eighties, used his local knowledge as a postman in the Machynlleth area to good affect and came home over a minute clear of 1997 winners, Clive Williams/Patrick Walsh.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two Alan Gaunt/Maurice Leach took their Peugeot 205 to a dominant win on the Rali Bro Caron to make it two wins in a row on the Lampeter & District MC event. As ever the rally, which was a round of three major road rally championships, attracted a full 90 car entry. Crews faced a 140 mile route consisting of just two competitive sections, the petrol halt being the only respite.

Their victory on Telford AC's Moonbeam Rally put Dennis Quinn/Andrew Thomson in a very strong position in the West Midlands Championship - they had now taken maximum points on all of the first three rounds of the series. The Moonbeam had a reputation as a tough event and the torrential rain in the days leading up to the rally just added to the task facing competitors. Of the 75 starters only 38 were classified as finishers.

Alan Jôs made it a hat trick of wins on the Rali Llyn as he navigated Steven Roberts to victory on the Harlech & District MC event. Gerallt Davies/Michael Evans came home second to make it a 1-2 for the organising club. Second placed Davies/Evans picked up the least penalties, 55 seconds, over the opening Le Jog style regularity section, but fell back during the standard sections which followed; they finished 23 seconds behind Roberts/Jones, who had dropped 1m 24s on the regularity.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three The Northern crew of Terry Pressdee/Ian Tullie took their Chevette to victory on the Greenleaves Rally in Mid-Wales. It was a demanding event that was badly affected by the cancellation of a key element of the route in the second half.

Border 100 Rally 1998
Welsh Border Car Club's Border 100 Rally was won by the Toyota Corolla of Kevin Parry/Gareth Price. The rally, a low key 'fun' event, attracted a full 50 car entry, who tackled a very wet 93 mile route in the Llanfyllin/Oswestry area. Pre-event favourite and rally sponsor Phil Turner, partnered by Owen Dodd, failed to make it to the finish after his Escort developed electrical and fuel pump problems.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Four Having retired while leading the Greenleaves Rally earlier in the month, the Aberystwyth pairing of Huw James/Patrick Walsh, made amends by taking victory on their club's home event, the Night Owl Rally. They led from Start to Finish. In contrast there was a titanic battle for second place, with six crews being within 18 seconds of each other at the end.

Gremlin Rally 1998
Brecon MC resurrected the Gremlin Road Rally after an absense of ten years. It ran alongside the night section of the Welsh Rally Retro and gave the thirty starters a tough test. The only crew to really master the format were the eventual winners, Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson, who brought their Escort home twenty-one minutes clear of the opposition. This was the duos first rally victory.

Glyn Jones/Huw Lewis took their Subaru Impreza to victory on the Mid Wales Stages. Amazingly they were the only one of the top ten starters to make it to the Finish. The North Wales crew had only been in sixth position at the halfway point but powered through to win by two and a half minutes after all their competitors fell by the wayside.

Phil Turner/Owen Dodd once again underlined their dominance of road rallying in the Oswestry area when they took victory on the Classic Lanes Rally. The Welsh Border CC event was a counter for the West Midlands Championship and used a familiar Oswestry to Dinas Maddwy and back route, which proved popular with the competitors.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Five Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins (Vauxhall Astra) emerged as winners of the Suzanne Crowley Memorial Rally. With four crews finishing clear of any penalties, the result was decided on engine capacity; thus the winning margin was 4cc. It was the Astra crew's maiden rally win.

The 130 mile rally proved a tough test. The format of minimal plotting time combined with an intricate route caused problems for a number of crews.

Derek McGinnigle/Rupert Astbury (Ford Sierra 4x4) took their maiden rally win on the Sweet Lamb Stages. The 12 stage event had a number of leaders but most succumbed to mechanical problems and failed to make the Finish. Ian Gwynne/Shaun O'Gorman (Subaru Legacy RS) led until the halfway point, before electrical problems put them out of the event.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven Ian Jones/Alan Jôs took a clear victory on Harlech & District MC's Rali Bro Cader. Local favourites Jones/Jôs were on the pace all night in their Peugeot 205, they led from the second section to the end. Dennis Quinn/Andrew Thomson picked up least penalties over the first section, but fell back with a slipping clutch on their Escort to finish second.

Saw & Weld Novice Rally 1998
Martin Bradley/Gordon Bradley took victory in their Escort on Telford Auto Club's Saw & Weld Road Rally, this was after a close battle with the Peugoet 309 of Paul Harris/Paul Stocking. Entries for the event were only accepted from novice crews. Despite this restriction the club did well to attract 45 crews to the rally, 16 of whom were Beginners.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eight Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson took their second victory of the year when they won Amman & District MC's Rali Mynydd Du. The Bala & District MC organised event was a counter towards both the West Midlands and North Western Championships, having been dropped from the Welsh series after the organisers had been forced to postponed the event from its intended July date.

Carl Hawkins/David Campbell took victory in the Derbyshire Peak District when they overcame tough opposition to win the 061 Road Rally. The popular event was a round of both the North Western and East Midlands Road Rally Championships, and as such attracted an entry of 48 starters.

After a storming drive in their Porsche 911, Richard and Katy Tuthill took a decisive win on the Bulldog Historic Rally, the final round of the Motoring News/Demon Tweeks Historic Rally Championship. The victory promoted Tuthill to second place in the drivers' series, as most other leading contenders, including title winner Des Nutt, gave the rally a miss.

David Young/James Young took what, in the end, was a comfortable victory in their Escort RS2000 on the Meirion Rally. This was despite failing to take fastest time on any of the event's four stages. The fastest car in the rally was the Escort Cosworth of Dave Humphreys/Ian Pryce. They were quickest on all four stages, setting times that would have put them in the top three of the main Bulldog event.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Nine For the second year in succession Gareth Jones/Iestyn ap Daffydd won their local event, Blackwood MC's Malky Road Rally. The torrential rain and gales that hit South East Wales during the day preceding the rally, and that continued throughout the night, made life difficult for both competitors and marshals. Despite this only half a mile of the 149 mile route had to be cancelled.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Ten Andy Sheppard/Mike Hart took victory on Ludlow Castle MC's Peak Revs Rally. Sheppard, the event sponsor, thundered through the Shropshire lanes to repeat his win of the previous year. The only crew to remotely match the winners' pace was the Escort of Alan Walker/Nick Darkin, who were just 50 seconds behind at the end.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eleven Phil Turner and Owen Dodd renewed their highly successful partnership and took victory on Newtown AC's Holrus Rally. Turner/Dodd overcame a number of minor difficulties, including filling up with deisil at the petrol halt, and ended the rally with a winning margin of 21 seconds over Dennis Quinn/Andrew Thomson.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One Alan Gaunt/Marc Jones started their road rally season with a convincing win on the Rali Bro Dyfi. The Dovey Valley MC event proved to be a tough test as only twenty-two of the sixty starters were classified as finishers. Richie Lewis/Richard Preece had led after the first of the rally's six sections but had dropped to second and picked up a fail for a missed signature by the petrol halt.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson underlined their growing stature within Welsh road rallying when they took victory on a hard fought Rali Bro Caron. This was their third outright win within twelve months and pushed them into second place in the Welsh Road Rally Championship. The leaders at the halfway point were Gethin Lewis/Aled Jones, however they were among a number of crews who wrong slotted in Brechfa.

Adrian Hodgson/Sean Caddick took victory the Moonbeam Rally. The pairing had a problem free run to bring Hodgson his second win on the Telford AC event - he'd previously won the rally in 1991. The rally used the usual Moonbeam format - utilising the tight and twisty lanes to the south and east of Shrewsbury, with a generous use of farmyards and tracks. The latter were to cause problems for a number of competitors.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three The Gremlin Rally organisers encouraged crews with histroric cars to enter their Welsh Championship road rally and it was one of these crews, Bob Gibbons/Mark Appleton, in a Ford Cortina, who took victory. Nick Broadway/Andy Oakes secured victory by just five seconds on Bala MC's PK Memorial Rally. The 1998 winning driver, Peter Zjalic, with Patrick Walsh on the maps, finished second. There were seven crews still free of penalties at the petrol halt, however the eight mile timed to the second section immediately after the halt was to split the cars up.

There was no battle for the Coracle Stages win, Steve Petch simply took fastest time on all stages and ended the day almost two minutes clear of the field. The main interest of the event was the contest for supremacy in the Peugeot 106 Super Cup. Twenty-nine of the French cars started and Mark Fisher took his first Cup win.

The organisers had declined to be included in the Welsh Championship but, despite its closed to club status, there were still 72 starters. However a tough format, which included a run through the Brechfa Forest and numerous farm tracks, meant that only 32 crews made it to the finish of the 140 mile challenge.

The event mixed clubmen with historic entries and ran alongside the Bulldog Rally; using the final five stages of the main event. The rally should have seen a comfortable victory for Phil Collins/Cliff Simmons. Unfortunately their Escort ground to a halt with electrical problems halfway through the final stage.

The rally took place in atrocious conditions and proved a tough test - the weather made the whites difficult to negotiate and the organisers' use of numerous three metre controls kept navigators on their toes. The result was that only Adam/Gadsby completed the route without picking up penalties for missing any controls or route checks.

By the petrol halt there were only eleven crews who were free of fails. Top seeds Gwyndaf Lloyd/John Hands were out with a holed radiator on their Escort and Mark Williams/Rob Richardson were sidelined by ignition problems.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eight Phil Turner entered the Peak Revs as a test for his new car, a Golf GTi, and, partnered by Owen Dodd, promptly won the event. However it was a close run thing with the leading runners being seperated by just a few seconds. The early pace was set by Alan Walker/Nick Darkin, they were the only crew to clean the first section. Unfortunately their Escort broke a brake disk on a uphill hairpin at the start of the third section and they were out.

Holrus '99 Road Rally
Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Nine Phil Turner/Owen Dodd took their second successive victory on Newtown AC's Holrus Rally on a night of treacherous conditions. As crews left Newtown at the start of the 120 mile event, it appeared that fears of frost could be set aside as rain was falling, however as competitive motoring started this hope was soon dispelled. The roads to the south of Llanidloes had a covering of frozen snow and the going was hard. Most crews had problems leaving an uphill control in Waunmarteg Forest and were further delayed on the ascent out of Bwlch-yr-Sarnau.

Lee Matthews/Endef Davies took a close fought victory on Caernarvonshire and Anglesey's JJ Brown Memorial Rally. The closed to club event used a 100 mile route which generally stayed close to Caernarvon, but did loop up to Llandberis and the Ogwen Valley. The rally used 90 miles of standard sections, but it was to be the single six mile regularity section that was to be most crucial in deciding the leading positions.

Suzanne Crowley Memorial 1999
Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson completed a highly successful year by taking victory on Barcud MC's Suzanne Crowley Memorial Rally. The newly crowned Welsh champions won by just five seconds, the event being decided on the very last section. The Tregaron based event opened with a run over Abergwesyn, which was easily cleanable. This was followed by a regularity section that eventually had to be cancelled after the intermediate clock failed. This left the top crews clean of penalties as they entered the final section.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One Huw Evans/Patrick Walsh (Ford Escort) made a perfect start to their Welsh Championship campaign by taking a convincing win on the Rali Bro Dyfi. The Dovey Valley MC organised event proved a tough test for competitors with just twenty-four of the sixty starters making it back to the rally's base in Machynlleth. With gravel tracks making up a large propotion of the route the going was made harder as a heavy drizzle fell for the duration of the event.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two A nimble Nova proved the perfect tool in the twisty Carmarthenshire lanes for Keith Daniels/John Hands to take victory on the Rali Bro Caron. The Lampeter MC organised 110 mile event was the second round of the Welsh Championship and as ever attracted an over subsrcribed entry of 75 starters. Fifty-six of these starters made it to the Finish.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three Toby Adam/Pat Gadsby took a popular victory over the Epynt Ranges on the Gremlin Rally. After a bad start to the season, the result put them back into contention for the Welsh Road Rally Championship. Adam/Gadsby won the rally by cleaning all the sections on the Military Ranges but, despite this performance, they still only twenty seconds clear at the Finish.

Kevin Hesketh/Steve Price (Ford Escort) took a clear cut victory on the Moonbeam Rally; at the Finish they were over two minutes clear of their nearest rival. Kevin Ikin/Martin Saunders finished fifth, they had held second at Petrol but then lost time after missing the exit road off a disused railway line and were also slowed by an intermittent loss of lights.

The Harlech & District MC rally developed into a battle between three local crews. Jones/Williams dropped only a second over the opening regularity section and this was enough for them to withstand a strong challenge over the rest of the rally from Carwyn Evans/Iestyn Williams.

Phil Turner/Owen Dodd took a comfortable victory on Welsh Border CC's Border 100 Rally. It was expected that the rally would be a battle between Turner/Dodd and the 1999 winners Derwyn Evans/John Furniss. However Evans' Vauxhall Astra ground to halt after just 30 miles when the bottom end failed on the engine. Turner was then left to canter to the win, three minutes clear of the field.

The Abergavenny AC organised event attracted forty entries, 27 of these were either novices or beginners, who were the only crews eligible for the overall positions. Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Five After a number of near misses in early part of the 2000 season, Aled and Eryl Evans finally achieved an outright win by coming home at the front of the field on the Night Owl Rally. The Evans' press on style in their Ford Sierra 4x4 was well suited to the rally that used a large number of farm tracks and, by the time crews reached the petrol halt, they had pulled out a three and a half minute lead.

The rally was organised by Clwb Modur Cyrmu and ran alongside the night section of the Historic Welsh Rally Retrospective. The Welsh Rally Retrospective was won by the Mini Cooper S of Worth Birkill/Dave Harris; they finished 28 seconds ahead of the similar car of Peter Valentine/Mick Valentine.

The event was run in torrential rain and this combined with the Autumn's wet weather made the going very tough; of the 74 starters only 28 made it to the Finish. Wynne Pickersgill/Shaun O'Gorman made a good start to their 2001 season by taking victory in their Subaru Impreza on the Red Kite Stages. However, having fought a tight battle with daylong leaders Graham Middleton/John Morgan, they left it until the last of the event's eleven stages to take the lead. Welsh Road Rally Championship Round One With a comfortable winning margin, Huw Evans/Patrick Walsh made it two victories in two years on the Rali Bro Ddyfi. Evans/Walsh were a minute and half quicker than any other crew over this section, thus securing the victory and top Welsh Championship points. They were followed home by series rivals Graham Evans/Ian Mills in second place and Dennis Quinn/Dave Evison in third.

John Thomas is known in the West Wales road rally community as 'John Mark One' and it was naturally in a Mark One Escort that he, partnered by Owen Dodd, won Lampeter MC's Rali Bro Caron. However it was a narrow win as the Astra of Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins was just seven seconds down on Evans/Dodd at the end of the 120 mile rally.

Ieaun Rowlands continued his good run of results by taking an overall win on the Bulldog Clubmans Rally, although the matter had to be decided on a tie break. Nightwatchman Rally 2001
Mike East/Roger Davidson took their Peugeot 205 to victory on Central Sussex MC’s Nightwatchman Rally. They emerged with a three minute winning margin after completing a 185 mile route in the lanes of Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire. Despite the length of the route, the final results were largely determined by two incidents. Firstly, a number of wrong approaches at TC6 and, secondly the impact of a large pot hole just prior to TC41. TC6 accounted for, amongst others, the two top seeds.

Dave Twilton/Mike Petch took their Vauxhall Vectra to victory on the Maple Garage Beaver Road Rally. The Beverely & District Motor Club event used a 140 mile route in the Humberside area, and due to the Foot & Mouth epidemic, all on surfaced roads. Holrus Stage Rally 2001
Newtown AC only managed to attract eighteen entries to their Holrus Stages Rally, despite it being held on the tarmac roads of the Eppynt Ranges. However the event was well received by those crews that did take part. The rally saw a close battle between the Darrian T90 of John Dalton/Llinos Jones-Edwards and the Metro 6R4 of John Price/Caroline Price, with the Darrian claiming the winner’s laurels.

Chelmsford MC’s legendary Preston Rally, based in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, made use of the tracks, both public and private, that abound in those two counties. The 2001 event had 110 miles of competitive motoring, of which 85 miles were on unsurfaced tracks. Steve Webster/Roger Hage (Subaru Impreza) beat off a challenge from Andy Baker/Lee Burgess (Peugeot 205).

Telford AC ran their third rally of the year at the West Midland Showground at Shrewsbury, the first time the venue had seen competitive rallying. The event offered 12 stages giving a total of 35 stage miles, 70% on tarmac. Forty-seven crews took the start. Dave Willett/John Roberts emerged as winners in their Astra engined Escort.

However to a certain extent it was also a fortunate win as the Aberyswyth pairing had lost over three minutes when they picked up a puncture on the section just prior to the petrol halt.

The first time pairing of John Haden/Iain Tullie took a narrow win on the Bruce Robinson Rally after a night long battle with Bob Marshall/Roger Hage. The matter was only decided on the last section, a regularity test on the tracks of Wickenby Airfield. Haden/Tullie, competing in a Impreza, were almost a minute faster than any other crew over this section.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Three Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies have always performed well on road rallies which use the Epynt Ranges and this form continued when they took their Ford Escort to an outright win on the Gremlin Rally. The Gremlin comprised three rallies, a modern event which was the third round of the Welsh Championship, a Post-Historic and an Historic rally. Thus a bumper entry of 102 cars started from the Brecon Leisure Centre, with 55 making it through the 200 mile route to return there in the morning.

After running course car on the Malcolm Wilson Stages during the day, Stuart Newby/Paul Holmberg took victory on the Memorial Road Rally overnight. This was the pair's second victory of the year. Newby/Holmberg brought their Subaru Impreza home almost a minute clear of the Escort of Michael Pedley/David Pedley. Terry Martin/Simon Bentley were third, although they dropped thirty seconds on the last section after their Peugeot stalled and was reluctant to restart.

Jon Lawson/Chris Pringle bought a Subaru Legacy on the afternoon before the Ryemoor Trophy Rally and promptly used it to win the second running event. Lawson/Pringle were the pace setters throughout the rally and finished four minutes ahead of second placed crew. The four wheel drive of the Legacy being particularly useful through the critical section in Roper Forest.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Four The Greenleaves Rally for 2002 proved to be a tricky event with only two crews completing the course free of any fails. Mark Appleton/Anthony Preston took a cautious approach to this first section and got the critical control right. They then completed the rest of the event without incident and took victory in their Peugeot 106 Rallye.

Steven Roberts made it three wins in five years on the Express Motors Commercials Rali Llyn, partnered by Darren Garrod, he took a narrow win from top seeds Ian Jones/Alan Williams. The hired Subaru Impreza of Haydn Davies/Paul Roberts was tying for the lead at the petrol halt, however the car caused a premature end to the rally as it went up in flames and was totally destroyed on the penultimate section. Due to the need to get fire appliances to the scene the rally was halted at that point.

Glyn Price/Huw Jones made the most of local knowledge as they took a decisive win on Welsh Border CC’s Border 100 Rally in their Ford Escort. By the petrol halt Price/Jones had built up a lead of over two minutes as the route took them over home territory. A steady run by Robert Wilson/Dylan Jenkins saw them through to a win on the Y2K Two 2002 Rally. The road rally ran alongside the night section of Clwb Modur Cymru’s Historic Welsh Retro event. The Welsh Rally Retro was won by Peter Horsburgh/Anthony Preston, who led home a Mini Cooper S 1-2-3 on the event. Len Olds/Andy Ballantyne had led at the lunch halt, but lost time with a wrong slot in Crychan on the night leg.

In 2002 they kept on the pace to bring their Mini Cooper home just over a minute ahead of Ryemoor Trophy winners Jon Lawson/Chris Pringle in their Legacy.

Broughton & Bretton MC ran their first road rally for some years and gained backing from their local Skoda dealers, Clarks of Wrexham, for the event. The clear winners were Jason Stone/Paul Holmberg in their Peugeot 205, the car having had a new gearbox fitted after its retirement on the Night Owl. The pair came home two minutes clear of the field, a result that increased Holmberg's lead in the ANWCC series.

There was a close finish to the Barcud Rally as only one second separated the two fastest crews after 110 miles of motoring. It was the Ford Escort of Gareth 'Gog' Jones/Patrick Walsh that took victory over the VW Golf of Phil Turner/Owen Dodd. Neither crew had been in the top three at the halfway point but both pushed to the limit in the second half which used the lanes around Lampeter.

Barbara Carter Memorial Rally 2002
Exmouth MC's annual road rally was renamed in honour of Barbara Carter, an enthusiastic motorsport supporter and competitor, who died in 2001. Many of those taking part in the event had previous competed with Barbara. When the results were announced it was found that two crews had tied for the win with penalties of two minutes. The matter was therefore decided on egine capacity, with the Peugeot 205 1.9 of Darren Dixon/Peter Barnard taking the win from the Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 of Adrian Beer/Chris Beer.

Eagle Road Rally 2002
After three years of running as a daylight road rally entirely within the Sweet Lamb Complex, the Eagle Rally moved to the Hafren Forest and night time for the 2002 event. Time was dropped at a large number of controls and the eventual winners, Howard Price/Carl Williamson, finished with total time penalties of 9m 37s. The fastest crew of the night were Phil Turner/Owen Dodd who would have won the event but missed the very first Passage Control in the forest.

Peter Barnard made it two wins in successive weekends; he followed up his Barbara Carter Memorial victory by taking first place on the Wessex Rally. The intended route had been 103 miles in length but the final seven miles had to be cancelled at the last moment when it was found that Railtrack had closed a level crossing for repair work during the night.

The rally was dominated by the Seat Ibiza of Lee Matthews/Gari Matthews; they were thirty seconds faster than any other crew over the decisive section around Llanedwen and then were the only competitors to clean the test that used Bwlch-gwyn Quarry, the latter being the brothers' home territory. They finished ninety seconds clear of the field.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Six The final results of the PK Memorial Rally showed the leaders to seperated by just a few seconds with Glyn Price/Huw Jones emerging as victors to add the PK to their Border 100 win earlier in the year. They came home just four seconds in front of the second place crew. The runner up spot had to be decided on the furtherest clean tie break as Steven Roberts/Darren Garrod and Dave Jones/Baz Green ended up with penalties of 49 seconds each.

The rally developed into a three way battle that was not resolved until the final section. The crews involved were Andy Baker/Lee Burgess (Peugeot 205), Tim Tordoff/Ian Frazer (Vauxhall Nova) and Guy Robinson/Gary Evans (Vauxhall Nova). They eventually finished in that order but not before all had hit problems towards the end.

The rally was won by Paul Schatz/Jerry Hettrick in their Citroen AX, it was the third time in succession that this crew had triumphed on the Westmorland, having previously been winners in 1999 and 2000. The Mel Harries Memorial Rally reappeared after a three year absence and it proved to be a great success with competitors. They tackled a 100 mile route in the Llandeilo-Carmarthen-Ammanford area. Ceri Richards/Aled Jones arrived at Petrol clean, Gary Jones/Nigel Nelson had dropped just one second and Gareth Lloyd/Ryland James were on two seconds. The matter wasn't decided until the final section.

Clitheroe & District MC's Hall Trophy Rally proved to be a tough test for competing crews. The navigation wasn't exceptionally difficult, but a complex route, with a large number of code boards and controls, put the pressure on the navigator. Despite picking up a five minute penalty for missing a code board Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie put an end to their period for non-finishes by claiming victory in their Vauxhall Nova.

Mike Biss/Cath Woodman took their fifth win of the season on Oxford MC's Bullnose Rally. The event used a 120 mile route which started and finished at the Membury Service Area. The route formed a figure of eight with the M4 service area at the crux. Many fast B-roads were used, but crews also had to tackle around eight miles of whites on the Lambourne Downs.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven The rally turned into a tight battle between the Escort of Steven Roberts/Darren Garrod and the Subaru Impreza of Haydn Davies/Owen Dodd. Entering the last section Roberts/Garrod were just a few seconds ahead, however with less than two miles to go they misjudged a 90 right and crashed heavily into a wall. This allowed Davies/Owen to finish, taking the victory over two minutes ahead of the field.

After Graham Middleton withdrew his entry, the pre-event favourite became Leon Pesticcio, who was testing his Lancer Evo7. Teifi Valley MC introduced a new format to modern road rallying with the Rali Cilwendeg - a two night road rally. The event used a 270 miles route, split between Friday and Saturday night. The rally settled in to a two way battle between the Ford Sierra of Toby Adam/Byron Jones and the Mitsubishi Lancer of Alun 'Timo' Evans/Rob Richardson. The latter pairing were to finish the rally with the quickest time but they picked up a fail at a triangle control and this dropped them from first to twenty-ninth.

Graham Nunn/Paul Nelson made the best use of local knowledge to win the Mercian Road Rally in their Peugeot 205. They’d had a scare with an oil leak at the Start, but this was resolved so that they could complete their victory. The only crew to get close to matching the winners’ pace were Jamie Gratton-Smith/Richard Hage, who finished second to make it a Peugeot 205 1-2.

Martin Smith/PRAR took victory by just one minute from Dominic Worsfold/Matt Fowle. The winners had at one point sideswiped a tree, causing damage to the rear quarter of their Toyota Corolla, but this didn't stop them overhauling Worsfold/Fowle, who had led at the petrol halt. The runners up were competing in the navigator's Peugeot 205. Bob Dance/Graham Dance in a similar car finished third.

For most of the front runners there were just two sections on which they dropped time. With the Classic Lanes Rally being decided over a just a few miles there was bound to be a close finish and so there was. Mal Acott/Nigel Roberts coming home just nineteen seconds ahead of Brynli Thomas/Roger Evans. For Acott it was his first ever rally win, Roberts having previously won the Barcud Rally 2000 with Phil Turner.

Three crews set a pace well clear of the rest of the field, these were Nigel Davies/Karen Davies, Gareth 'Gog' Jones/Patrick Walsh and Ceri Richards/Aled Jones. After a few near misses in the last few years Davies/Davies eventually managed to win the rally, sealling the victory by being almost thirty seconds quicker than Jones/Walsh at ITC9.

The rally turned out to be a battle between Worsfold/Fowle and pre-event favourites Mike Biss/Cath Woodman. Both crews dropped just three minutes over all sections bar the one between TC16 and TC17, this included a hard to find triangle control, Worsfold/Fowle spent four minutes finding the correct route and visiting the route check, Biss/Woodman missed the control and the result was decided.

The event, Harlech & District MC’s third road rally of the year, was a novice event with expert crews excluded. Battling through heavy rain crews tackled a ninety mile route on the Lleyn Peninsula. Despite the conditions forty-one of the fifty starters completed the rally.

Peter Gorst/Derek Bateson were declared the winners of The Harry and The Ivy Clubmans Rally after tying on penalties with Paul Schatz/Jerry Hettrick. The Kirby Lonsdale MC organised event used a 98 mile route, which took crews in a roughly clockwise loop around the rally’s base at Kendal.

Mike Biss/Cath Woodman took their seventh win of the year on Central Sussex MC’s Nightwatchman Rally. The win also secured the Rally 2002 Championship for the pairing, the series being co-promoted by the South Eastern and Central Southern Associations. The only crew to challenge the winners were Steve Coles/Bob Blows, they narrowly missed to make their time at two controls during the night and finished two minutes down on the winners.

The Maple Garages Beaver Rally saw John Haden/Iain Tullie take their third win of the year together. Haden/Tullie had a night long battle with Guy Robinson/Charlie Wheeldon. The Subaru pair were second fastest at IRTC5, the first control at which all crews dropped time, Robinson/Wheeldon were 41 seconds behind. Haden/Tullie were then fastest at IRTC8 to arrive at Petrol 1m 09s ahead of Robinson/Wheeldon.

Steve Cole/Bob Blows overcame fading brakes and tricky navigation to win Sevenoaks & District MC’s Kent Rally. The 150 mile event used the lanes in the heavily populated area of North and West Kent. The nature of the roads meant that the rally was very much a navigational affair, with the different classes being given trickier navigation dependent on their amount of experience.

Despite missing two code boards Malcolm Holdsworth/Chris Pringle ended up winners of Berwick & District MC’s Buglass Trophy Rally. For his navigator, Paul Holmberg, it was a second successive win on the Broughton & Bretton MC event. An experimental type of event, an Endurnace Rally, a mixture of road rally sections and test, was won by Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell in a Rover Metro. It was based in Cardiff and used a series of tests, or Primes, and road rally time control style sections. The rally used tracks and roads in Caerwent, Walters Arena, Epynt, Sweet Lamb and Abergewsyn. Turner/Dadswell were fastest on Prime 1 and took a lead they weren't to loose.

The well organised event saw crews tackle a 150 mile route in Northumberland which included fifteen miles through the Keilder Forest. Gary Jones/Andrew Card took a clear win on a challenging Twilight Rally to give the driver a hat trick of wins following his success on the Pacemaker and Barcud rallies. For the event Jones had forsaken his familiar Corolla and was competing in an ex-Pete Cotton Escort. It seemed to be a successful move as he and Card romped home ten minutes clear of the field.

Taking the fastest times over the two sections timed to the second ensured that Steve Head/Graham Raeburn secured victory on the Hall Trophy. Navigation was by the London Map system. Unfortunately the rally descended into confusion as both of the course cars broke down and, as they were carrying the route hand outs, crews were left guessing where they should be heading.

Welsh Marches Showground Stages 2003
Dai ‘Dot’ Davies/Steve Pugh took their Vauxhall Chevette to victory at the Royal Welsh Showground, coming home a narrow five seconds ahead of the field. Ian Godney took fastest time on SS4 and was then in the top three for all but one of the remaining tests. This allowed him to take second place, 27 seconds ahead of third placed Eric Weaver.

Sweet Lamb Stages 2003
After four stages of Ecurie Royal Oak MC’s Sweet Lamb Stages Julian Reynolds/Ieaun Thomas lay in twenty-eighth position, however they fought through the field to take first place by over a minute at the Finish. Reynolds had put the car off the road on a deceptive left hander in Hafren on SS3, losing three minutes in the process. Paul Tod/Iestyn ap Dafydd overcame a number of problem to grasp first place in the 205 Challenge on the Sweet Lamb Stages on the very last stage.

Kevin Belcher/Antony Walker took victory on the Bullnose Road Rally by the narrowest of margin, one second, as the top nine places were decided on a tie breaker. Nine crews were clean of penalties on all sections bar the single regularity test, this may not have been the case but for a lack of marshals on some tight sections.

An assured performance over the two nights of the event propelled them to victory on the classic West Wales road. The pairing came home just three seconds ahead of the VW Golf of Huw Myfyr/Gwawr Hughes. The two crews dropped time on just two of the event’s nine sections. The battle took place over 125 miles of the tight lanes in the Porthmadog area.

The father and son pairing of Peter and Andrew Dale were the clear winners of Rhyl & District MC’s highly popular J. D. Romain Novice Rally. As it was a novice rally, Semi-Experts weren’t eligible for overall awards, however this rule became irrelevant as far as first place went, with the novice pairing of Dale/Dale storming through to take the win, fifteen second ahead of any other competitor.

There was a dead heat for the win of Borough 18 MC’s Powerush Rally, with the matter being decided in favour of Andy Coshan/Phil Kendall on the furthest clean principle. The Kent based event had a 165 mile route which included runs through the North Downs and Romney Marsh. Cryptic navigation, a tight route and slippery conditions made it a tough challenge.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven Glyn Price/Huw Jones took victory by just one second from Mark Price/Paul Middleton on Welsh Border Car Club’s Classic Lanes Road Rally. Guy Robinson/Charlie Wheeldon overcame a poor start to take first place on the Altratech 061 Road Rally. The new organising team had decided to bring the timing fully in to line with the MSA regulations by having crews carry over any seconds dropped at one timing point to the next. This, in particular, caught out Robinson/Wheeldon, they added two unnecessary minutes to their total, leaving them in eighth place after Time Card 1.

Despite a long lay off Mike Biss/Cath Woodman maintained their winning ways by finishing first on the Pheasant Plucker Rally. Doug Kingsley/John Stringer were the stars of the rally. They had built up a seven minute lead by the petrol halt and looked on course for victory when the gearbox failed on their Nova. This allowed Biss/Woodman through to take their first win of the year.

The John Robson Memorial Rally saw three crews finish clean of any penalties, with the win being awarded to David Tubman/John Tubman on engine capacity. Paul Hughes/Richard Holdsworth had intended competing in an RS2000, however problems with that car meant that Hughes’ Audi TT was wheeled out for the second rally in succession - its 1800cc turbo charged engine put them firmly in third place.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Eight Daniel Jones followed up his Cilwendeg win with victory on the Malky, however the matter had to be decided on a tie break after Jones, and navigator Patrick Walsh, finished on the same time as Glyn Price/Steve Herbert. Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies finished in 12th place, this was enough for Jones to clinch the Drivers' title, however the fact that John Davies/Neil Bevan finished in third, meant that Bevan could still deny Davies the series win on the final round, the Greenleaves.

Steven John Williams/Geoff Williams took a narrow win on Harlech & District MC’s James Trenholme Memorial Rally. The closed to club event was aimed at novices and beginners, experts crews were excluded from the entry. Despite this restriction the 60 starting places were over subscribed. Crews tackled a compact 85 mile route which was all within the westernmost part of the Lleyn Peninsula, straying no further east than the Pwllheli-Nefyn main road.

The ex-MN Road Rally Champion, who was partnered by Paul Howarth, finished just one second ahead of the Greenergy Impreza of Nigel Griffiths/Caroline Samuels after nine stages at the Sweet Lamb Rally Complex. After seven stages it appeared that Dave Weston/Neil Shanks (Ford Escort WRC) had the rally sewn up, sitting as they were on a 21 second lead.

Severe flooding swept the area during the 24 hours prior to the start, however Whickham & District MC persisted and kept the event running. Graham Middleton/John Morgan overcame a down on power engine and a time consuming spin on the final stage to take victory on Telford AC’s Tolputt Keeton Winter Stages. The rally developed into a battle between the Hyundai Accent WRC of Middleton/Morgan and the Group N Impreza of Dorian Rees/Patrick Walsh. Middleton had found that the Accent’s newly installed engine seemed to lack power on the car’s previous unit but despite this he had managed to eek out a 23 second lead by the start of the final stage.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Two Mark James/Anthony Davies (Ford Sierra 4x4) took their first ever rally win on a foreshortened Gremlin Rally. Snow had fallen on the day prior to the rally and on the night a severe frost - several degrees below freezing - set in. The 'main' roads on Epynt had been salted, but most hadn't. The conditions meant that it became less of a battle to maintain the time schedule and more of a fight to keep within maximum lateness.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Four Steve Wood/Aled Richards took a clear victory on Aberyswyth MC’s Night Owl Rally. They finished the event over a minute clear of their only real challengers of the night, John Davies/Steve Herbert. The father and son team of John Dimbleby/David Dimbleby took their first rally win on the Lincolnshire Clubmans Rally. A tight battle for the victory had to be decided on a tie-breaker. Oaks Trophy Rally 2004
Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie took their first win of 2004 on ERO’s Oaks Trophy Rally. In a close fight Hawkins/Tullie finished just two seconds in front of Michael Pedley/David Pedley. Iain Scott/Jez Harris had led initially but a missing arrow on the High Rake section saw them wrong slot and they finished third.

Mel Harries Memorial Rally 2004
Martyn O’Connor/Peter Collins took their second successive victory on Ammanford MC’s Mel Harries Memorial Rally. The pairing had been in third place at the petrol halt but a smooth run to the Finish, plus problems encountered by their rivals, saw them take a comfortable win. The surprise leaders at this point were Huw Jeffreys/Avarina Connor.

G&P Memorial Rally 2004
Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg (Ford Escort RS2000) followed up the previous month’s win on the Witch Way with victory on Garstang & Preston MC’s Memorial Road Rally. The 2003 winners Terry Martin/Paul Taylor (Peugeot 205 GTi) had led at the halfway point, but a wrong slot in the second half dropped them to third at the finish.

Mid Wales Clubman Stages 2004
Graham Middleton demonstrated the superiority of WRC cars when, partnered by John Morgan, he won the Mid Wales Stages by over two minutes in his Hyundai Accent WRC. He took fastest time on all of the event’s seven stages. Middleton/Morgan, running on second hand tyres, suffered a puncture on the first stage (SS3 Hafren North), but was still fastest by 31 seconds. By the service halt, after four stages, the Hyundai pair had a lead of 1m 46s. Geno Cook, benefiting from the experience of new co-driver Elwyn Manuel, took a narrow win on the Mid Wales Stages 205 Challenge.

Three Swans Road Rally 2004
Andy Beaumont/Mike Petch took their Proton Satria to a second successive win on Selby & District MC’s Three Swans Road Rally in East Yorshire. The pairing took a narrow victory, finishing just four seconds ahead of Steve Webster/Roger Hage.

PK Memorial Rally 2004
Tony Gush/Gareth Price picked up just sixteen seconds of penalties on their way to winning the PK Memorial Road Rally. The Bala MC event used a 100 mile route in the Ruthin/Cerrigydrudion area and had a capacity entry of 75 starters. Mei Jones/Steve Herbert (Vauxhall Astra GTE) arrived at the halt having cleaned all the sections up to that point. Gush/Price were in second place on 16 seconds, 27 seconds ahead of top seeds Brynli Thomas/David Pedley (Subaru Impreza).

Barbara Carter Memorial Rally 2004
Three crews finished the Barbara Carter Memorial Rally with clean sheets and therefore shared the overall win. All three winners received awards; Worth Birkhill/David Harris won the Historic category prize, Simon Robison/Perry Roe, who started at Car 21 in the diesel engined Skoda, took the Semi-Expert class trophy, while Roger Hunt/Graham Dance received the overall award.

AB Motorsport Road Rally 2004
Mark Whitford/Steve Porter took a clear cut win on Matlock MC’s AB Motorsport Rally, after 115 miles of rallying, and their key rivals falling by the wayside, they finished over two minutes clear of the field. Nick Toplis/Mick Fern (Vauxhall Nova) led the main event at the halfway point, they were on 1m 34s, 15 seconds in front of Steve Webster/Roger Hage (Subaru Impreza). Whitford/Porter were in third on 2m 20s.

Welsh Endurance Rally 2004
For the second running of their Welsh Endurance Rally, Amman & District MC decided to run the event completely within the confines of the Caerwent MOD base. The rally was a round of the Peugeot 205 1400cc Challenge and series coordinator Pat Flynn had brought a car along to demonstrate the pace possible. Flynn went on to win the event with a victory margin of eight minutes.

Terry Martin/Paul Taylor overcame a number of problems to win Spadeadam MC’s Countdown Navigational Rally. The Rocket Historic Rally ran alongside the Countdown and was won by the Porsche 911 of John Hartley/Stephen Coombes.

Barcud Rally 2004
In 2003 Gary Jones won the Barcud Rally with Dave Pitchford; Pitchford was killed in a road accident later in the year. In 2004, with Steve Herbert in the left hand seat, Jones repeated the result. The pair came home twenty seconds ahead of the field on the Tregaron based rally. Seventy-five crews tackled 100 Miles of West Wales roads.

The Oxford MC event started from the Prodrive Headquarters at Banbury and the rally began with a test in the car park of the nearby Hella factory. Twenty-nine crews then tackled a 140 mile route. Phil Kendall/David Coles took the overall win despite an almost total loss of brakes.

Richard Endean/Kevin Wills were declared the winners of the Harvest Road Rally on engine capacity after seven crews cleaned the South Hams MC event. Competitors had tackled an extremely slippery 150 mile route in the Totnes and Kingsbridge areas.

Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg maintained their 100% record when competing together by winning the Altratech 061 Rally. It was the third time they’d paired up and the third time they’d won. There was a tight battle for the lead with the top four crews being separated by under a minute at the Finish.

Welsh Road Rally Championship Round Seven Seventy crews started a demanding Malky Rally, which roads in the Heads of the Valleys and the Black Mountains region. There were 13 regularity sections, with numerous three metre controls to tax the navigators. There were still numerous competitors in contention for the Welsh Championship.

For the reigning Welsh Champions it was their first win of the year on the series' final round. The 2004 Navigators' title race went down to the wire, with the championship's first round scores needed to separate the two contenders at the Finish.

Dafydd Edwards/Clive Bayley emerged from a night long battle for the lead to win Harlech & DMC's Rali Goffa James Trenholme. The winners fought throughout the night with the fellow Impreza crew of Aled Roberts/Edgar Jones; swapping the lead a number of times. The two cars were separated by just sixteen seconds at the end.

The Kirby Lonsdale MC was open to Novice and Beginner crews only. There was a 93 mile route. Despite the novice status, navigation was demanding, with herring bones and reverse tulips used on the opening section.

Holrus Road Rally 2004
The Holrus proved a tough test, made more difficult by foggy conditions. This led to only 25 of the 75 starters being classified as finishers; many went OTL as they struggled to follow the intricate route. Andy Sheppard/Justin Brooks took the lead on the second section and came home over a minute ahead of the field.

A puncture on the very first section didn’t stop Paul Swindells/John Stringer taking victory on North Devon MC’s Ilfracombe Rally. They beat 2004 Southern Champions Phil Kendall/David Coles to first place by a minute. Roy Gillingham/Peter Blackett, competing in a Reliant Sabre, won the Historic Rally.

Lombard Revival Rally 2004
The Revival Rally 2004 was designed to re-create the challenge of RAC Rallies of the 1950s and 1960s, to add to this feel the organisers had included items within the format which would link their event with by gone RACs - the start was in York, the Finish was in Cheltenham. It was a tough three day test; of the 110 starters, only 57 made the Finish.

The first running of the Farrington Trophy in fifteen years was won by Baz Green/Rob Jones; this gave Jones his second win on the Clwyd Vale MC event, his previous victory had been in 1988. Kevin Parry/Gareth Price, who had led at Petrol, took the runner up spot.

Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg were in 33rd place after the first section of the Preston, but came through to snatch a last minute victory on the Chelmsford MC event. They thus maintained their 100% record, with four starts together and four wins. Matt Fowle/Mark Appleton had led with one section to run, but a broken front strut saw them crawl to the finish in the runner up spot.

Nigel Roberts/Dale Furniss took a clear win on Telford AC's Novice Rally. The winners cleaned the first half of the 96 mile rally, then picked up a five second penalty for an early arrival at one control and were twenty five seconds late at the tie decider section, this gave them the win by over a minute.

Pacemaker Rally 2004
Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla) dominated Knighton MC's Pacemaker Rally. The pair finished with a winning margin of more than three minutes, having dropped only a minute themselves over the 140 mile route. The pursuit of the flying Corolla was led by Andrew Sheppard/Justin Brooks and Mark 'GT' Roberts/Denny Harris, but the former retired after Petrol and the latter picked up a fail in the second half.

Gremlin Rally 2005
The 2004 Welsh Road Rally Champions, John Davies and Neil Bevan, took their first win of 2005 on Brecon MC’s Gremlin Rally. The 180 mile event used its traditional format of marked maps sections over the Epynt Ranges and Abergwesyn plus two Jogularity sections. It was these two latter sections that were to decide the rally.

Lombard Revival Rally 2005
Jamie Turner/Graham Dance took a last minute victory on the second running of the Lombard Revival Rally. The battle for the win was in doubt throughout the four day event, with a number of crews taking their turn at the lead. The 126 starters that left Oxford City FC’s Kassam Stadium on Thursday faced a tough challenge, a 1,200 mile route which included 52 selectifs. As they set out the coldest weather for some years hit Wales, where the meat of the event was to be found.
