Clerk of the Course: Mark Jukes & Jon Stobbs
Route: 137 Miles
Maps: 145
Starters: 60
Winners: Tony Davies/Dyfan Davies (VW Golf GTi)
The joint Clerk of Courses of Teifi Valley Motor Club's Cilwendeg Rally, Steve Davies and Dyfan Davies, took their Golf GTi to victory on the club's other road rally, the Rali Bro Teifi. It was a well judged run. Despite not being in any major road rally championship the Bro Teifi attracted a full 60 car entry and sponsorship from commercial vehicle dealers Corbett Williams as well as the local Renault dealership A. C. Davies. The latter's prenises were used for the petrol halt.
The 137 mile route had the Start, petrol halt and Finish at Cardigan, the crews completing a loop to the north in the first half, before heading south in the second. Instructions for all but seven miles of the course were issued at the start control and competitors were then sent to a holding area for 45 minutes to plot. The dry weather made for fast times and contributed to the presence of a very large number of enthusiastic spectators.
The entry was soon down by one when Rali Bro Caron winners, Alan Gaunt/Maurice Leach, withdrew after missing a secret check on the run out. Kevin Lewis/Dylan Evans were also early retirements when they rolled their Golf on the second section, the accident blocked the road and led to the section being scrubbed. Also out before petrol were Eilir Morris/Dave Pitchford, the oil catch tank filled on their ex-Ron Beecroft Escort causing lubricant to spray onto the engine. They repaired the fault and then acted as course car in the second half.
At the halfway halt only two crews remained clean, these were the eventual winners, Tony Davies/Dyfan Davies in a Golf GTi and the 1300 Escort of Dave James/Emyr Jones, the latter were to drop 5m 05s in the second half and they eventually finished fifth. The one section timed to the second was immediately after the petrol halt. Davies/Davies picked up their only penalty of the night, 56 seconds, here. Arwyn Thomas/Andy Bowen were fastest here on 0m 24s, but having dropped a minute on the plot and bash section in the first half they had to be content with second place at the Finish, the same result as last year.
Last year's winners, Elgan Jones/Byron Jones, took third, they were also on one minutes penalty at Petrol and then dropped 1m 24s on the tie breaker section. The Semi-Expert class was won by Dylan Davies/Mark Owen, who brought their Escort home in ninth overall. The Standard Production Award went to Martin Williams/Nigel Williams who finished 15th overall, while the novice award went to Nigel Griffiths/Arno Ozinga.
