Starters: 29
Winners: Phil Kendall/David Coles (Peugeot 309 GTi)
Phil Kendall/David Coles took the overall win on the Bullnose Road Rally despite an almost total loss of brakes.
The Oxford MC event started from the Prodrive Headquarters at Banbury and the rally began with a test in the car park of the nearby Hella factory. Twenty-nine crews then tackled a 140 mile route.
Unfortunately, due to marshalling issues and the difficulty for crews to identify the correct route through the cones in the dark, penalties for the test had to be scrubbed.
Kendall/Cole built up a four minute lead by Petrol as other crews struggled with the navigation, which had been made more difficult than previous years. This cushion allowed them to see off a late charge from Jamie Turner/Graham Raeburn, who cleaned the second half. The winners had to resort to using the handbrake to slow their Peugeot down for the latter part of the event.
Turner/Raeburn, who were testing out a newly built Metro in preparation for the Revival Rally, suffered a puncture but managed to change it and complete the section with just seconds to spare. Paul Morley/Paul Hardy completed the top three, well clear of the rest of the field.
Adam Holder/Simon Harris were the leading Semi-Expert crew, while Mark Bonner/Gary O’Grady won the Novice class.
