Clerk of the Course: Aled Jones & Dylan Evans
Route: 110 Miles
Maps: 145
Starters: 75
Winners: Toby Adam/Byron Jones (Ford Escort)
Toby Adam had revenge for his defeat on the previous weekend's Malky Rally by taking a commanding victory on the Cilwendeg Rally. Adam, partnered by Byron Jones, took the lead on the second section of the classic West Wales road rally and came home 45 seconds clear of the opposition.
As ever Teifi Valley MC had an oversubscribed entry for Newcastle Emlyn based rally, with 75 crews taking the start. They faced a demanding 110 mile route, although the lanes were drier than would have been expected given the previous week's weather. However several fords were used and these caused problems for a number of crews.
Hefin George/Dilwyn John were fastest over the first section in their Nissan Sunny GTi-R but retired almost immediately afterwards when they suffered a puncture and had the wheel studs shear off.
Adam/Jones thus took over the lead which they were never to lose. The Cilwendeg was the crew's fifth outing together, a partnership that had netted a remarkable four wins and one second place.
Second place fell to John 'Mark One' Thomas/Eurig Evans to make it a Mark One Escort 1-2. The 1999 winners, Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins, continued their good run of results and came in third.
Tony Davies/Ieaun Thomas had a problematic night, reporting a number of minor offs, a loose exhaust and a persistent misfire and so were pleased to finish as high as fourth.
Malky winner Gary Jones, with Andy Oakes on the maps for the Cilwendeg, had a disappointing outing, picking up two fails and with time penalties fifteen minutes greater than the winners.
Alun Gaunt, making a return to road rallying and partnered by Carl Williamson, finished eighth, a position they should have bettered but for picking up large penalties for booking into a regularity time control early.
Ceri Richards/Nigel Nelson had a short rally, retiring after breaking their Escort's suspension on the first white of the night. Arwyn Thomas/Andy Bowen got only a little further, becoming victims of one of the deep fords on the route. Other early retirements were Clive Greaves/Hywel Greaves (broken throttle pedal), Gareth Evans/Gwynfor Jones (broken exhaust) and Takashi Takeuchi/Zip Zerihan (flooded engine)
Huw Evans/Patrick Walsh were holding fifth place at Petrol before disappearing from the event early in the second half.
The Semi-Expert Class was won by the Toyota Starlet of Richard Briddon/Edryd Evans, they were five minutes clear of Andrew Williams/Wyn Davies, with Dalis Ifans/Aled Richards a further 30 seconds down.
Richard Jones/Dylan Davies won the Novice Class, with Car 75, the final starter, Mike Lewis/Jason Murphy in second. The Standard Production Award was won by the Astra of Owen Llwyd Edwards/Dorian Davies.
