For 2004 the Cilwendeg returned to its traditional one night format and an early November date. It attracted a full entry of 75 starters, which were led away the 2003 winning driver, Daniel Jones, who had Dorain Evans on the maps.

The opening section started near Penrhiw-pal and finished at Beulah. In between competitors had to tackle numerous farm tracks and a maze of lanes. There were four Intermediate Time Controls, situated virtually every two miles. This format continued for the rest of the night.

The only crew to clean the section to ITC1 was Gareth 'Gog' Jones/Carl Williamson (Subaru Legacy). Howard Price/Steve Herbert (Ford Escort) were closest to them on eight seconds.

Jones/Williamson dropped their first time at ITC2, but were the quickest to the control. They completed the remainder of the regularity without any more penalties. Therefore by RF1 they were 15 seconds ahead of Price/Herbert and John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra), who were tied on 1m 00s. In fourth, three seconds further back were Tony Davies/Dyfan Davies (Subaru Impreza).

Already out of the fight was the Renault Clio of Delfryn Owens/Jeff James; they ended their event in a hedge. Kevin 'KJ' Jones/Dilwyn John also put their Ford Sierra into the scenery and were out as well. Also in trouble were the top seeds; Jones' Escort wasn't running cleanly and this led to their retirement before the petrol halt.

Regularity Two started near Bryngwyn and ran via Ponthirwaun to Llandygwydd; there were three ITCs. Davies/Davies were quickest through it, dropping 2m 30s. They now held the lead, 36 seconds ahead of Davies/Bevan, while Jones/Williamson fell to fifth, 1m 18s off the lead.

Two sections looping over and around the Preseli Mountains were cleaned by all of the leading runners. This meant that positions remained the same when they arrived at the Glandy Cross petrol halt.

By this point Gareth 'Shonkey' Jones/Andy Oakes had retired with a failed diff on their Corolla and a broken drive shaft had put an end to the rally for Marc Jones/Jon Stobbs (Ford Sierra). A severe misfire led to the retirement of Alyson Acreman/Matthew Maidment (Honda Civic).

Despite complaining of a broken tramp bar, John ‘Mark One’ Thomas/Eurig Evans (Ford Escort Van) were holding third place.

For the leading runners there were five 'droppers' in the second half, which finished at Rhos. Remarkably the top five positions didn't change between Petrol and the Finish, although there were some swapping and re-swapping of places and the gaps between the competitors grew.

Davies/Davies made the most of their car's four wheel drive and extended their advantage to over a minute and a half by the end, to give the Subaru Impreza its first road rally victory in West Wales.

Thomas/Evans passed Davies/Bevan for second place at the first dropper of the second half and held the position until the final control, when the Astra crew got back ahead to secure the runner up spot.

Jones/Williamson also got past Price/Herbert soon after Petrol and only lost fourth place after the Subaru pair were heavily peanlised for early arrival at a control where they skidded past the control board.

A night long misfire hampered the progress of Hefin George/Daniel Thomas (Nissan Sunny) and they then lost all the brakes on the final section, however they still finished in sixth place. Kevin Morgan/Neil Spiers (Subaru Legacy) took seventh place at the end, despite having lost time after drowning out in a ford.

A broken sumpguard caused the withdrawal of Alan Gaunt/Garry Robbins (Peugeot 306), while a holed sump stopped the Peugeot 309 of Geraint James/Seffan Evans. Toby Adam/Byron Jones (Ford Escort) had a half shaft break and a broken Astra engine was the cause of Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins' demise.

Ceri Jones/Jenny Evans (Peugeot 205) won the Semi-Expert class, finishing five minutes ahead of any challengers. Aled Jones/Llyr Williams (Vauxhall Astra) won the novice category, being the only Class 3 crew to finish fail free, their nearest rivals picked up five fails.

It had been a tough event, only 32 of the 75 starters made the finish.
