Danum Rally 2004

Lindholme Motor Sports Club

11th/12th September 2004

Clerk of the Course: Ian Beech

Route: 130 Miles

Maps: 112 & 113

Starters: 27

Winners: John Dimbleby/David Dimbleby (Ford Fiesta XR2)

Sixteen year old David Dimbleby navigated his father John to victory on Lindholme MSC’s Danum Rally.

Danum Rally 2004

The 130 mile event started in Scunthorpe and finished at Caenby Corner. It used demanding navigation including herringbones, out of order spot heights, out of order grid lines and totals of a number of spot heights.

The winners got off to the worst possible start as they lost three minutes with a wrong slot just 300 yards into the rally, however they fought their way back over the rest of the 130 mile route to take the win by just fifteen seconds.

They were fortunate to finish however, as late on they put the Fiesta into a ditch and were only got out thanks to Danny Robinson/Ian Gibbins who stopped and pull them out.

Almost every crew reported time loss due to errors solving the plot ‘n bash navigation. Malcolm Holdsworth/Richard Holdsworth and Andy Beumont/Mike Petch both took turns at leading, but wrong slots dropped them to third and fourth respectively at the Finish.

Eventual runners up Mick Monaghan/Iain Tullie lost time early on and could not quite make back enough to snatch the win at the last moment.

James Everard/David Jobling won the Semi-Expert class despite managing to take a tyre off the rim on one junction.

Matt Blood/Graeme Porter were one of the few retirements; their Peugeot 205 Rallye succumbing to a misfire in the second half.
