The Greenleaves began and finished at Builth Wells, with competitive motoring starting south of the town at Pen-y-garreg. The opening section was a seemingly straightforward run down the lanes to Erwood and then on to Llandefalle. Although it finished with a run through Brycheniog Forest.

Surprisingly it caused problems for a number of the leading runners. There were a number of PCs, only one was a diagram control, but Car 2, Brian Jones/Patrick Walsh (Ford Escort), failed to record the correct code at PCD, while both Steve Woods/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra GTE) and Rhodri Lloyd/Ian Cooke (Rover Mini) failed to get PCF. Woods/Richards were also having to contend with a severe misfire above 4000 revs.

It was also a bad start for top seeds Wayne Morris/Paul Middleton (Ford Escort Mexico); they wrong slotted, arriving three minutes late at TC3.

Kevin Hesketh/Shaun O'Gorman established a thirty second lead after they'd been quickest through a decisive section in Brycheniog Forest. However as they neared the petrol halt, they were caught out by a sharp bend in a muddy farmyard, their car made contact with a wall and they retired.

Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort) then inherited the lead they weren't to lose. For the reigning Welsh Champions it was their first win of the year on the series' final round. They finished 55 seconds ahead of the field.

Dai John/Paul Bevan (Toyota Corolla) took second place and secured the Standard Production title in the Welsh Championship, while Andy Sheppard/Justin Brooks (Ford Escort) recovered after being baulked for over a minute in the forestry section to take third.

Douglas Bowkett/Clive Meredith (Peugeot 309 GTi) were the clear winners of the Semi-Expert class but David Walters/Nathan Davies (Ford Escort RS2000) just held off Cliff Jones/Jason Reynolds (Vauxhall Nova SR) in the Novice category.

John Davies had secured the Welsh Drivers' Championship on the penultimate round of the series, the Malky, however the Navigators' title was still up for grabs and there were three contenders still in with a chance of winning.

Anthony Davies, was in third place in the table prior to the Greenleaves; he needed to win the event if he was to stand a chance of taking the Championship. He hit problems towards the end of the first half; he and driver Marc James retired their VW Golf with a failed alternator at Petrol.

This left the battle between John Davies' map man, Neil Bevan, and Paul Holmberg, who was navigating for Dennis Quinn. Quinn/Holmberg finished in fifth, while, after a subdued run, Davies/Bevan were tenth. This meant that the two ended the season tied on the same points.

The tie-breaker was the score on the first round of the series, the Bro Caron. Bevan had been third on the Lampeter event, while Holmberg was 13th. This meant that the John Davies/Neil Bevan partnership took the Welsh title.
