A puncture on the very first section didn’t stop Paul Swindells/John Stringer taking victory on North Devon MC’s Ilfracombe Rally. They beat 2004 Southern Champions Phil Kendall/David Coles to first place by a minute.

The weather conditions made for a tough night of rallying. The first half was very wet, while fog decended on the second half route.
Roy Gillingham/Peter Blackett, competing in a Reliant Sabre, won the Historic Rally, while Wes Massem/Shon Gosling finished in scond place and secured the HRCR Nocturnal Challenge title. They also tied up the ASWMC Championship as well.
Roger Hunt/Graham Dance and Dave Hughes/Paul Robinson had been battling for the lead in the first half of the rally, they were five minutes ahead of the field at Petrol, but neither featured in the final placings. Hunt/Dance broke a gearbox and went out, while Hughes/Robinson got stuck on a track, freed themselves after two hours and completed the rally in last place.
Ian Orford/Bob Jones and Worth Birkhill/Dave Harris both retired after drowning out in a deep ford. Another victim of the ford were Richard Cann/Phil Luxton, but they got going again and finished in ninth place, having lost 20 minutes in the incident.
On what proved a tough night, the top novices, Scott Jonas/Chris Perry, finished in a superb fifth place overall.
