John Robson Memorial Rally 2004

Hexham & District Motor Club

9th October 2004

Clerk of the Course: Ed Graham

Route: 100 Miles

Maps: 87

Starters: 20

Winners: Andy Whittaker/Charlie Tynan (Peugeot 205)

Andy Whittaker/Charlie Tynan took victory after a tightly fought battle on the John Robson Navigation Rally.

The Hexham & DMC event used a 100 mile route in western Northumberland, it included a run through tracks on two stately homes and Slaley forestry. The opening section used the Staingate Roman Road, which was rather rough.

Whittaker/Tynan finished just a minute ahead of a trio of crews who ended with the same penalty. Second place therefore had to be decided on a tie-breaker, which was the crew’s time at a secret time control. The result was that Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison took the runner up spot, while road rally debutant Jamie Edwards, who had Stewart Merry on the maps, was placed third. The 2003 winners David Tubman/John Tubman rounded off the top four.

Michael Glendinning/Andrew Roughead led at Petrol but had to withdraw when the driver became ill with kidney stones. Dave Lewis/Bob Hargreaves retired after breaking their Mexico’s exhaust, the car having suffered with an electrical misfire since near the start. Bill Chadwick/Alan Edwards went out at the petrol halt with their 205 suffering from a blown head gasket.
