Mercian Road Rally 2004

Sponsored by Historic Motorsport

Mercia Motor Sports

25th/26th September 2004

Clerk of the Course: Bob Budd & Dave Oliver

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 140 141 & 151

Starters: 43

Winners: John Haden/Roger Hage (Subaru Impreza)

For the second year in succession John Haden/Roger Hage took victory on the Mercian Rally. The Mercian Motor Sports organised event used 140 miles of slippery lanes and tracks in the East Midlands.

There was a night-long battle for the lead. Mark Whitford/Steve Porter led at the three-quarter distance but problems on the final time card saw them drop to third at the Finish. Haden/Hage stormed through the final section in their venerable Impreza Estate to snatch the win, while John Ross/Oliver Ross continued their run of good results by taking the runner up spot.

An historic rally, a round of the HRCR Nocturnal Challenge, ran along the modern event and this was won by the Mini of Dick Appleton/Mark Appleton, who set a time that would have given them victory in the overall event.

John Stephens/Paul Stephens won the Novices class, while Chris Ladkin/Steve North won the Newcomers category.

Having started well, a holed sump on the second white of the night put the BMW M3 of Simon Randall/Charlie Wheeldon out of the event. Adrain Ancliffe/John Chadwick finished, but had to cut route after putting a hole in the radiator of their Escort.
