Winners: Wayne Morris/Paul Middleton (Ford Escort Mexico)
Wayne Morris/Paul Middleton made it a hat trick of wins on Telford AC’s Moonbeam Road Rally by clinching victory on the 2004 event. Competing in a newly built Mark One Escort they finished over two minutes clear of the field.
The route was just 90 miles in length, but it proved to be a tough test using the usual Moonbeam territory and tracks. Competitive motoring started near Yockleton and then moved south, going as far as Wistanstow, before heading back to the rally's Finish at Allscott. The most significant section turned out to be at the base of the Long Mynd.
Almost all of the top fifteen crews wrong slotted on the extreme right of square 3889; having entered the square from the west, they took the bridleway going south just prior to the correct route which was the white that looped to the south of Myndtown.
Morris/Middleton were the first to make the error, they recovered without loss of time. Kevin Ikin/Martin Saunders, who had been in the lead, followed their tracks and dropped two minutes before getting back on to the correct road. Howard Price/Carl Williamson, who were running third on the road, went down the track and, as the previous two cars had churned up the clay, they got well and truly stuck and took over an hour to get out.
They were joined by Kevin Hesketh/Nigel Roberts and Adrian Higman/Brynmor Pierce, who also went OTL before recovering the road. Adrian Hodgson/Chris Lightburn and Glyn Price/Huw Jones lost a large amount of time at the same spot.
The top two crews completed the route without further mishap and took first and second places, separated by two and a half minutes.
Tony Gush/Gareth Price were lying in third place at Petrol but then hit a rock which deranged the rear suspension of their Peugeot 205 and broke the exhaust, forcing their retirement. Martin Lloyd/Baz Green had struggled with a slipping clutch, but were put out of the rally when their Escort's rear strut was broken on the climb up the Long Mynd. Delwyn Price/Steve Price went out at the same point when their Escort suffered a broken rear suspension.
Car 40, the Ford Sierra 4x4 of Jon Ross/Dave Stocking, finished in third place and won the Semi-Expert Class.
Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Steve Herbert (VW Golf GTi) finished in 8th, they'd lost time after misplotting the location of a passage control. Mark 'GT' Roberts/Denny Harris (VW Golf GTi) finished in 22nd place having taken 12 minutes to fix a wiring problem just after the start of the second half.
The Novice Class was won by Edryd Evans/Richard Briddon (VW Golf GTi), the pair swapping seats for the Moonbeam. They had suffered a puncture in the first half that had cost them seven minutes.
