Clerk of the Course: Alan Jones

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 136 & 148

Starters: 51

Winners: Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla)

Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla) dominated Knighton MC's Pacemaker Rally. The pair finished with a winning margin of more than three minutes, having dropped only a minute themselves over the 140 mile route.

Pacemaker Road Rally 2004

Starting and finishing in Knighton, the route headed as far west as Rhayader, before getting back to its base by a more southerly path.

Jones/Herbert were clean until ITC3, which was preceded by a run along the Cefn-suran White; they were 10 seconds late at that control, the best peformance of any crew and this established a lead that they weren't to lose.

The pursuit of the flying Corolla was led by Andrew Sheppard/Justin Brooks (Ford Escort) and Mark 'GT' Roberts/Denny Harris (VW Golf GTi). By the petrol halt, which was taken early at Llanbadarn Fynydd, Sheppard/Brooks were still only 17 seconds off first place. Unfortunately they were to retire just after the restart.

At Petrol, Roberts/Harris were already almost a minute behind Jones/Herbert. They fell down the order and out of contention when they received a Wrong Approach at a triangle control at the entrance to Cwmysgawen Forest. They completed the event and were finally classified in 12th place.

There had been a number of significant retirements prior to the fuel halt. Glyn Price/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort) had suffered a broken diff, while a broken shaft had stopped the similar car of John 'Mark 1' Thomas/Gwawr Hughes after just 20 miles. Mal-de-nav was the cause of Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Brynmor Pierce (VW Golf) pulling out.

Guy Woodcock/Phil Harrison had a more dramatic exit; hitting a gatepost in their VW Golf VR6. Andy Oakes/Chris Oakes rolled their Corolla out of the event.

The value of a skilled navigator was demonstrated by the fact that Car 40 was now in the running for the runner up spot. Jason Jones had been without a map reader at the start and Graham Dance, who had been planning to marshal, was drafted in to partner Jones. At Petrol, they led Trevor Pritchard/Paul Middleton (MG Maestro), in what would become the battle for second place, by 19 seconds.

Roger Hicks/Mark Hamilton (Ford Escort) had been just in front of this fight at the fuel halt, but they then picked up a fail after missing a TC on the Sychnant White, in Square 9577, shortly after the restart.

Novice Class Winners: Simon Naughton/Gareth Thomas (Ford Escort)

Jones/Herbert continued their pace through the second half, which included, as a finale, a run through Radnor Forest. The pair dropped time at only two controls, and at one of these they were only a second off their time. They finished with a total penalty of exactly one minute.

In the battle for second place Pritchard/Middleton overtook Jones/Dance at the first timing point after Petrol and the Maestro pair maintained their position to finish 38 seconds ahead of the Escort crew at the end.

On times, David Jones/Glyn Price (Peugeot 205) were only the seventh fastest Semi-Expert crew at the Finish, however they were the only ones to complete the route correctly, without incurring any fails, so justifiably took the class win. In fact, only eleven crews completed the demanding event without picking up a fail.

Nic Morris/Roger Chilman (Vauxhall Nova) had a healthy lead of eight minutes in the Novice category before they retired, the class award was then taken by Simon Naughton/Gareth Thomas (Ford Escort), who finished in 19th place overall.
