Saint Wilfrid's Road Rally 2004

Ripon Motor Sports Club

7th/8th August 2004

Clerk of the Course: Adam Roper

Route: 110 Miles

Maps: 99 & 100

Starters: 53

Winners: Mick Monaghan/Iain Tullie (Peugeot 205)

A misfiring Peugeot 205 couldn't prevent Mick Monaghan/Iain Tullie from taking victory on Ripon MSC's 110 mile Saint Wilfrid’s Road Rally.

Saint Wilfrid's Road Rally 2004

Competition for the 53 starters began near Thirsk. The route then moving to the Rievaulx and Helmsley areas, making use if the infamous Rievaulx White for the first time in a number of years, as well as the Caydale Mill Ford. The course then tracked south and west back towards the finish at Ripon.

There was a tight battle for the lead with Monaghan/Tullie tied with the Impreza of Steve Webster/Roger Hage on time penalties of 2m 14s at Petrol. The Peugeot pairing then lost 20 seconds when their mishaving car stalled on the section through Lightwater Valley.

Initially it appeared that this had handed the win to Webster/Hage by 22 seconds, however, they were found to have recorded a code board incorrectly; this added five minutes to their total and dropped them to seventh place.

Monaghan/Tullie therefore finished with a victory margin of 40 seconds over the Peugeot 205 GTi of Richard Chown/Mark Wagstaff.

There was a tight battle for third place. The position eventually went to Malcolm Holdsworth/Richard Holdsworth, but they were only two seconds ahead of Dan Robinson/Ian Gibbins at the end, while Andy Beaumont/Paul Taylor were just five seconds further back in fifth.

Car 2, the Seat Ibiza of Adrian Green/Charlie Wheeldon, could only finish in 14th place after missing a board on a triangle control early on in the event.
