Sweet Lamb Stages 2004

Ecurie Royal Oak Motor Club

19th September 2004

Clerk of the Course: Martin Rowe & Nigel Bayley

Stages: 10 (55 Stage Miles)

Venue: Sweet Lamb & Hafren

Starters: 51

Winners: Tim Freeman/Darryl Savage (Mitsubishi Lancer E3)

Tim Freeman/Darryl Savage took an emphatic win on Ecurie Royal Oak MC’s Sweet Lamb Stages, their second victory in a week; the pair had won the Dukes Stages the previous weekend. At Sweet Lamb they took fastest time on the first stage and then drew clear of the field as their principal challengers fell by the wayside.

The rally consisted of ten stages, both in Sweet Lamb and the Hafren Forest. The last stage being a fifteen mile test.

Freeman/Savage took fastest time on seven of the stages and ended the rally over 90 seconds ahead of the runners up, this was despite an engine that mysteriously seemed to loose boost at certain points in power range.

Paul Alexander/Mike Panes, who were out testing their Evo8, were Freeman’s closest challengers. They were slowed by a broken EGR valve on the second set of stages, but two fastest stage times left them within striking distance of the lead with just the final test to go. Unfortunately they picked up a puncture soon after the start and their challenge was over.

Patrick Naylor/Andrew Lawrence (Ford Sierra Cosworth), competing on their first gravel rally for twelve years, would then have taken second place but they stopped on the last stage as well.

Derek Tracy made the journey from Ireland for his first taste of Welsh stages on maps and, partnered by Dave Williams, took the runner up spot in his Ford Escort WRC. He had been on the pace for the second half of the rally, taking fastest time on SS8, after settling in on the first four stages.

Dave Jenkins/Graham Cox (Subaru Impreza WRC) were in a strong third place after four stages but they went off the road and out of the rally within a mile of starting SS5.

Tim Jones/Don James secured the Millers Oil Welsh Clubmans Championship and were the leading two-wheel drive car in fifth place overall. Their main challengers, Stuart Clarke/Cliff Simmmons (Ford Escort), had drowned out in a ford on a link section and suffered a misfire for the follwoing stage, then, on SS7, they retired with a failed diff.

PEUGEOT 205 CHALLENGE

The Sweet Lamb Stages was a round of the Peugeot 205 Challenge and twenty-nine contenders took the start.

Mike Nipper could have sewn up the title with a category win on the event, he was in second place just four seconds off the lead, when he went off the road on the final test.

Robbie Dale/Mark Mason led the Chasllenge after two stages, but went out on SS5 when they hit a log and bent the rear axle.

Jeremy Dawes/Cliff Jones had a lead of 14 seconds in the 205 Challenge after SS4, but destroyed their Peugeot in an off on SS6.

This left Clive Bayliss/Dominic Brown to reap the reward of a well judged run to take the win and tenth place overall. Tom Walster/Ian Holliday were second, just fourteen seconds behind, and were first in the Beginners class. Tom Fowle/Rob Spragg were struggling with a lack of power due to a broken exhaust, but salvaged third place at the Finish.
