Rali Llyn

Sponsored by Express Motors (Commercial)

Harlech & District Motor Club

20th/21st March 2010

Clerk of the Course: Paul Roberts

Route: 130 Miles

Maps: 123

Starters: 72

Winners: Dewi Williams/Rob Jones (Peugeot 205)

Dewi Williams made it two wins in two years on the Rali Llyn, for his navigator Rob Jones it had been a wait of 20 years to take his second victory on the Harlech event, having previously won in 1990.

The pair finished almost two minutes ahead of the runners up however at the halfway point they only held a narrow lead over a gaggle of pursuers. A clear run over the second half, combined with their rivals hitting problems, saw them take an emphatic win.

Five times winner of the event, Steven Roberts, who was navigated by Rhys Roberts, moved up from seventh at Petrol to take second place at the Finish.

Although the weather conditions were favourable there was a high attrition rate with only 37 crews being classified as finishers. Notably only three of the top ten starters made it through to the end of the rally.

Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Iwan Jones, revelling in the power of a new engine, had led after two sections but then went out when their gearbox failed. Pre-event favourites, Arwel Hughes-Jones/Dylan John Williams had a very short rally, they were also forced out by gearbox problems, in their case on the opening test.

Hywel Daves/Dale Furniss were just five seconds off the lead at Petrol and had retained that position when they collided with a tree on the last section. Dafydd Evans/Carl Jones were in third at the halfway mark but fell to sixth at the Finish after stopping to assist Davies/Furniss. An alternator failure stopped Steven John Williams/Lowri Davies, who had been in fourth at the fuel halt.

Rhys Morgan/Ianto ‘Fon’ Jones dominated the Semi-Expert class, they finished in tenth place, four minutes ahead of their nearest category challengers. Rhydian James/Steffan Garrod were equally dominant in the Novices, finishing in 13th place.
