10th/11th March 2012
Clerk of the Course: Kevin Hutchings & Dave Stocking
Route: 115 Miles
Maps: 126, 127 & 137
Starters: 72
Winners: Meirion Evans/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort)
Meirion Evans/Iwan Jones took their third win of the year on the Moonbeam Rally, giving Jones a hat trick of wins on the Telford event.
Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Steve Price led at Petrol, with Evans/Jones two seconds behind. Both crews had only dropped time on the opening four minute section. However Evans powered through the first test after the halt, taking nine seconds and the lead from Roberts. Evans then cleaned the rest of the route while Roberts lost further time when he met a non-competing car on a narrow lane. The two crews ended the night 23 seconds apart. Jonty Bloxham/Nick Bloxham rounded off the top three.
Despite admitting to being rusty Hywel Davies/Martin Phasey put in a solid performance to take fourth, while Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes had to contend with a puncture and a misfire to take fifth.
Both Meirion Evans and Richard Jerman were running 2.4 Escorts having changed their Escort engines after the previous week’s Gremlin, which was a Welsh Championship round and where that engine was therefore outlawed. While Evans took victory, Jerman narrowly avoided going OTL after he and navigator Lowri Davies wrong slotted and became stuck for 28 minutes.
Former BTRDA 1400 front runner Neil Weaver took the Semi-Expert Class win on what was only his second road rally.
