Winners: Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes (VW Golf GTi)
The Pacemaker Road Rally turned out once to be another battle between the VW Golfs of the Roberts cousins, with this time victory going to Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes.
After winning the Best Welsh Championship Round Award for the last two years the small organising team decided to reduce their workload and withdraw from the series. They opted to run with a short 80 mile route. Despite this, they lost none of the quality and produced one of the toughest rallies of the year.
At the halfway halt Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Dale Bowen led the winners by a narrow margin after the ‘Dude’ had suffered two punctures. However in the second half it was GT’s turn to hit problem and the two crews finished 19 seconds apart.
Richard Jerman/Lowri Davies finished third, two minutes down, after wrong slotting on a vital section and then being slowed by following the dust of slower cars.
The challenge of the event brought more experienced crews to the fore with Michael Pedley/David Pedley finishing fourth and John ‘Mk1’ Thomas/Neil Spiers fifth.
Nic Morris/Martin Phasey struggled after a long layoff and fell from third at one stage to sixth at the Finish.
