Seventy-five cars, the maximum entry, lined up at sponsor Dalton's ATV for Round One of the Welsh Road Rally Championship. They were to tackle an icy 99 mile route, which was split into four regularity sections, the entire first half was just one reg.

There was a short run out to RS1, which was at Trefilan. There was an easy start with the first ITC being at Newbridge, after passing through Cilcennin. Most were clean here, although John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) picked up a one second penalty for entering the control slightly after their due time. Previous Bro Caron winners, Michael Pedley/David Pedley (Ford Escort RS2000) made a major error, booking in over a minute early, with double penalties for early arrival it put them out of the running to repeated their 1995 success.

From ITC1 to ITC2, through Ty Nant and Foelallt, was more challenging and all were late at the second timing point. Top seeds Gary Davies/Aled Evans (Ford Escort) and Steve Wood/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra) shared best time, one second ahead of Nick Evans/Andy Oakes (Toyota Corolla), but the latter crew had already picked up a large early penalty at ITC1. This meant that Dafydd Wyn Jones/Gwynfor Jones (Ford Escort RS2000) were in third, three seconds off the lead.

Gethin Morgan/Dalis Ifans (Ford Escort RS2000) were one of a number of crews who were held for a minute after failing stop at a give way before ITC2.

There were a couple of significant early casualties. Engine maladies stopped the Vauxhall Astra of Nigel Nelson/Rob 'Sais' Richardson, they only got four miles before stopping. Rob Thomas/Jenny James came off the reserve list to take the start, but lasted just a mile before their Renault Clio broke its diff.

The section continued through Dilewyd and Cribyn. Again, many crews picked up small penalties for not entering the control precisely on their second, notably Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins (Vauxhall Astra) were twelve seconds late.

Most then lost time at ITC4, which was just beyond Pont Creuddyn, Davies/Evans were two seconds late, but Wood/Richards were on time and were now clear in first place. O'Connor/Collins and Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort) were also clean. This put Jones/Davies into third place, five seconds behind the leaders, with Mark 'GT' Roberts/Steve Price (VW Golf GTi) in fourth.

All were late at ITC5, which came after the tricky yellow past Cefnbys and Rhiwonnen. Davies/Evans were quickest here, importantly they were eight seconds faster than Wood/Richards and this put them into a six second lead. This section saw the demise of Edryd Evans/Richard Briddon, they rolled their VW Golf GTi a mile from the driver's home.

There were only minimal penalties at the next three timing points, these were, the main, caused by when the marshal pressed the button on their Liege Timer. This was immaterial to Wood/Richards as their Astra's engine blew, they had been five seconds off the lead.

ITC8 to ITC9, which crossed the Clywedog Isaf Brook, saw all lose over a minute. Davies/Evans weren't fastest, but, with Wood's retirement, they now held a lead of 19 seconds. O'Connor/Collins were quickest and this moved them from fifth to second place. At this point, after hitting a rock, the steering on Garry Robbins/Aled Jones' Renault 5 snapped and the car blocked the narrow lane, a number of the following cars were badly delayed, most significantly Roberts/Price were held up for almost five minutes; this possibly cost them a podium place at the Finish.

The next dropper was from ITC10 to ITC11 which used the Bayliau yellow, with its numerous ninety degree bends. Davies/Evans were best through it and now held a lead of 45 seconds over O'Connor/Collins, while Huw Evans/Patrick Walsh (Ford Escort) were in third, ten seconds further back.

The first half finished with a tight section from Rhydyfran to Llanycrwys, passing Cae Caradog. Davies/Evans emerged at the petrol halt, which was taken at Harford, with a lead of 39 seconds over O'Connor/Collins. Evans/Walsh were in third, but over a minute off the lead and only one second ahead of fourth placed Davies/Bevan. After a strong showing, the Escort of Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies retired at this point with a failed alternator.

The second half was split into three regularities, the first running down to Llanwrda and continuing to Felindre. It saw the end of the rally for Gary Jones/Gwawr Hughes (Toyota Corolla), they had been in sixth place at Petrol, but a broken diff caused their retirement. It was also a bad section for O'Connor/Collins who lost time at all five timing points; they fell from second to sixth. At the front Davies/Evans added to their advantage and arrived at RF2 49 seconds ahead of Davies/Bevan, who were now matching the leader's pace and moved up to second.

The third regularity started near Ashfield and finished at Abergorlech; there were three intermediate timing point, plus the finish control. Over the ITCs Davies/Bevan narrowed the gap to Davies/Evans by two seconds, but on the final part of the reg the Astra went into a ditch on a 90 left. It took the help of spectators to get the car back on to the road. Eleven minutes had been lost and the reigning Welsh Champions fell to eleventh place. This meant that after the section Davies/Evans led Evans/Walsh by just under three minutes. The battle for second place was intense with four crews separated by just ten seconds.

The final regularity ran from Llansawel and finished with the familiar maze to the west of Cwmann, in between there was a tricky section around Cwm Dawe. Davies/Evans blotted their copybook by booking in 32 seconds early at one ITC, but they still came home with a victory margin of almost two and a half minutes, giving them their second successive Bro Caron win.

O'Connor/Collins recovered from their Reg Three problems to come through to take a clear second place, 29 seconds ahead of Evans/Walsh. Glyn Price/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort) were fourth, 20 seconds in front of Gareth Evans/Eurig Evans (Ford Escort). Roberts/Price, having been delayed by the Robbins/Jones blockage, stormed through the second half to move from eighteenth at Petrol to seventh at the Finish.

The Semi-Expert Class was won by Dai Roberts/Rhydian George (Honda Civic), who finished in twentieth position, well clear of their nearest class rivals. Aled Davies/Rhodri Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi) won the Novice Class by over five minutes.
