Teifi Valley Motor Club

4th/5th February 2006

Clerk of the Course: Richard Evans & Dylan Jones

Route: 102 Miles

Maps: 158

Starters: 75

Winners: Dyfan Davies/Paul Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi)

Once again, on its fourth running, the Rali Bro Preseli attracted an oversubscribed entry despite being a novice oriented event - Expert crews were banned. To meet the demand, for 2006 the number of starters was increased from 60 to 75.

There was a 102 mile route; 61 miles in the first half and 41 in the second. There were six regularities.

From the Crymych start there was only a short run out with the first regularity starting just to the west of the village at Fronlas. There was only four minutes to get to the first ITC with the track through Fronlas Isaf to negotiate before reaching the control. All crews dropped time here.

Best by six seconds were Huw James/Wyn Mathias (Vauxhall Astra GTE), they were followed by Eiros Edwards/Beth Evans (Ford Escort) and, two seconds further back, Tim Hand/Jenny Evans (Vauxhall Astra GTE). These were the only crews to drop less than a minute at the control.

There was no let up in the pressure as another four minute section followed, the route continuing northwards to ITC2 at Llanfairnantgwyn after a run through farm tracks at Pantyderi. Again all were late at this control.

James/Mathias extended the lead as they were quickest by 34 seconds, Hand/Evans were closest to them. This gave the leaders a 42 second advantage over Edwards/Evans, with Hand/Evans only a second behind in third.

The remainder of the regularity, which finished near Rhos Hill, included another farm track, this time through Clos. It was James/Mathias who took their third fastest time, putting them in a lead of over a minute from Edwards/Evans. Hand/Evans fell out of contention after missing to record a code board correctly, this added five minutes to their total. Geraint Davies/Emma Davies (Mini Mayfair) and Richard Vaughan/Andrew Phillips (Peugeot 205) were amongst a number of cars who were also penalised five minute for failing to get a code board countersigned at the finish control.

There was then a non-comp section taking the rally through Bridell, with the second regularity starting south of that village at Blaenmergi. ITC3 was at the end of a track through Croesyforwyn.

James/Mathias only dropped five seconds and extended their lead to 1m25s, with Dyfan Davies/Paul Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi) moving into second, as they were 14 seconds faster than Edwards/Evans to ITC3. These three crews were pulling well clear of the remainder of the field.

The regularity continued but with a straighforward run down the main road through Eglwyswrw to Henllan. Another tight section, through Tyllwyd, took the route to finish of the section. Euros Evans/Gethin Edwards (Peugeot 306) were quickest here; this pushed them to within seven seconds of third place amd seventeen off second. James/Mathias had been second best to SF2 and now held a lead of 1m27s.

The third regularity had three ITCs, plus the finish control. It started at Felindre Farchog and went via Plas Lawrence, Monington and Treicert to end at Berry Hill.

Only the ITC following the section through Trefigin Quarry caused the leading cars to drop time. Davies/Jones were fastest here, 32 seconds better than James/Mathias, this cut the gap between the two crews to 52 seconds. At this point Evans/Edwards fell out of the lead battle as they missed to get a code board countersigned.

After a non-comp which passed Newport and Dinas Cross, the final section before the petrol halt went through Llanychaer, Pontfaen and Puncheston. There were two ITCs, plus RF4, only ITC9 at Penffordd caught the leaders.

Hand/Evans gained some time back after their earlier board penalty and took fastest time here, while Car 63, Christopher Williams/Brian Thomas (Citroen Xsara) were second quickest, but were well down the order after picking up a fail for booking in a minute early at the start of the second regularity, without the fail they would have finished in fourth place. Behind them Davies/Jones took another two seconds from James/Mathias.

There was a lengthy run up to and back from Petrol, which was taken at Eglwyswrw. James/Mathias now led Davies/Jones by 44 seconds, with Edwards/Evans 45 seconds further back.

A number of crews had failed to make the halfway halt, these included Eifion Thomas/Afan Thomas (Ford Sierra), Huw Phillips/Hefyn Thomas (Ford Escort) and Anthony Reynolds/Steffan Evans (Peugeot 205), the latter going out with clutch failure.

Two sections remained, the first of these looped around LLysyfran Resevoir, with the Parcymarl track being used in the middle. Over the whole regularity Davies/Jones got a little closer to the leaders, cutting another seven seconds out of the gap.

The last section of the night was also the longest, running from Poyston Cross to Llandissilio, the venue of the Finish. There were two ITCs, plus the finish control. It was to have a dramatic affect on the results.

Firstly, Evans/Edwards hit a gate in their Peugeot 306 and got no further. Then Edwards/Evans hit a tree stump; they damaged their Escort, but continued to the Finish; they were classified in third place, despite their mishap.

For the first time in the event there was a change of leaders. In the tricky section near Penffordd around Ffynnongain James/Mathias lost just over a minute to Davies/Jones, moving the latter pair into a 33 second lead.

So the final results showed Dyfan Davies/Paul Jones winning from Huw James/Wyn Mathias, with Eiros Edwards/Beth Evans in third, just under a minute off the lead. The remainder of the field were almost five minutes behind.

As usual on the Bro Preseli the previous year's winners were invited back to offer a benchmark to the current contenders, although they wouldn't be eligible for any awards. Peter Collins/Joanne Collins took up the invite and proved to be an excellent marker as they were the fastest crew of the night.
