Rali Bro Teifi 2004

Sponsored by John Roberts (Ffestiniog) Ltd + Cware, Pantgwyn Quarry

Teifi Valley Motor Club

27th/28th March 2004

Clerk of the Course: Martyn O'Connor & Peter Collins

Route: 115 Miles

Maps: 145 & 157

Starters: 75

Winners: Ceri Richards/Aled Jones (Ford Escort)

Kevin Jones/Dilwyn John (Ford Sierra 4x4) took a narrow win on the Rali Bro Teifi. They finished the event just two seconds ahead of Hefin George/Daniel Thomas (Nissan Sunny). The two crews had exchanged the lead several times before Jones/John hit the front on the penultimate section and retained it to the end.

From the start at Cardigan the 75 starters moved to the lanes between the coast and main Fishguard road for the two opening sections. Jones/John immediately made their mark by being fastest over Regularity 1 by 22 seconds. George/Thomas were only seven seconds behind them at the first ITCs, but then wrong slotted and dropped a minute at ITC3, where all other leading crews were clean. They were quickest to the finish control, but were in fourth place 36 seconds off the lead.

Second at this point were Daniel 'Lwni' Jones/Dorian Davies, however their Escort was misfiring badly. They had tried changing the plugs, but eventually found that a valve guide was leaking and fouling the plugs. They retired.

Jon Stobbs/Gary Robbins (Mazda 323) were holding third place, but this was the highest position they were to gain over the night and they slid back to finish in seventh.

Two of the fancied runners failed to complete the first section. Toby Adam/Byron Jones had the diff fail on their Sierra, while Arwyn Thomas/Patrick Walsh holed the sump on their Escort.

The second section included a run through Pantgwyn Quarry, sponsor of the event. George/Thomas were quickest over the test and moved up to second place, however Jones/John were only two seconds slower and so still held a solid lead.

The event was using Liege Timers for the first time. This led the top seeds, Ceri Richards/Aled Jones, into a disasterous error. They arrived at the finish control on the second section early, the marshal chipped their card when they arrived, but wrote the time that they requested, their due time, on their time card. Jones, thinking that he was on time, actually booked in three minutes early at the start of the third section and picked up three fails. Up until the restart after Petrol, where crews went back onto their scheduled time, he kept accepted times that were early. The results was that they were classified in 45th place with many fails and huge time penalties.

The long third section started near Dinas Cross and finished at Tufton. George/Thomas blasted through the lanes and tracks and took the lead by the finish control. Jones/John had a major problem as the central diff in their Sierra 4x4 had failed, leaving them with just rear-wheel drive for the remainder of the event. George/Thomas led them by 51 seconds as the started the fourth section.

Two short sections led crews to the petrol halt at Eglwyswrw. Getting used to their car's new set up, Jones/John closed the gap to the leaders down to three seconds by the mid-point break. Welsh Champions, Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies, held third, a position they weren't to lose.

The sixth section took crews towards Crymych. George/Thomas and Jones/John were evenly matched; the gap between them was narrowed, but only to two seconds. The penultimate test was to prove decisive; the key part being in the lanes to the south of Llechryd. Jones/John emerged back in the lead, two seconds ahead and, with a cleanable final section, that was to be the final result.

Tony Davies/Darren Garrod (VW Golf) had been struggling with a faulty fuel pump throughout most of the event, but then got stuck on a white on Section 7 and lost four minutes. They eventually finished in 19th place.

At Petrol Paul Jenkins/Brian Thomas had led the Semi-Expert Class, but a slipping clutch slowed them in the second half; they finished third in class. The category was won by Wayne James/Jenny James (Peugeot 205), while Richard Evans/Dai Evans (VW Golf) won the Novice Class.
