CSMA Civil Service Rally 2002

CSMA (North West)

7th/8th December 2002

Clerk of the Course: Steve Johnson

Route: 123 Miles

Maps: 98 99 103 & 104

Starters: 30

Winners: Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie (Vauxhall Nova)

Iain Tullie made it two rally wins in as many weekends when he followed up his Beaver Rally success by navigating Carl Hawkins to victory on the CSMA Road Rally. The rally attracted thirty starters and they tackled a 123 mile route in the Clitheroe/Settle area.

Hawkins/Tullie finished clear of time penalties but were penalised five minutes for failing to locate a code board and another five minutes for missing a secret check. This should have allowed Chris Day/Richard Chalmers to repeat their Witch Way win, however they dropped fourteen minutes on the final section when they had to retrace their steps to pick up two code boards they’d initially missed.

The CSMA was the final round of the North Western Championship. Stuart Newby, partnered by Paul Holmberg, had to simply finish in the top seven to take the drivers title. Unfortunately for him his Subaru Impreza was excluded after failing a mid-event noise test. This allowed Howard Price, who finished in tenth place, to claim the championship. This completed for Price an unprecedented triple crown of the Welsh, West Midlands and North Western Titles. Newby’s non-finish allowed Hawkins to take the runner up spot in the AWNCC series.

Chris Day’s second place meant that he clinched the SD3 drivers’ title as series rival Terry Martin retired on the opening sections after a wheel broke on his Peugeot 205.

There were twelve starters in the Club Sport event which ran alongside the main rally. This section was won by Chris Daly/Russ Moore who were competing in a Volvo 340.
