Richard Chown/Mark Wagstaff (Peugeot 205 GTi) took their maiden rally win on Eastwood & District MC’s Cossack Rally.
The rally was badly affected by fog and, despite the organisers extending maximum lateness for the second half, many crews were already out by that point.
It proved to be the toughest Cossack to date. In addition to the weather conditions, crews had to tackle 23 miles of private and farm tracks, as well as green lanes. These were mostly very wet and muddy.
Chown/Wagstaff were followed home by the first time pairing of Adrian Green/John Pickavance (Seat Ibiza). The result meant that Wagstaff had now secured the East Midland Navigation title.
A number of the crews, including the top three seeds, picked up a fail after missing the first time control. The navigational instruction told the competitors to pass under 10 transmission lines. The error was caused by crews finding an alternative solution to the navigation, however independent checks by the Stewards failed to support this interpretation; the Stewards found only one correct solution.
Most severely affected were Martin Betts/Charlie Wheeldon (Ford Escort), they would have won but for the resultant fail.
Nick Toplis/Mick Fern put their Vauxhall Nova GTE into a ditch on the Stonesby White. They were OTL by the time they got out.
The Semi-Expert award was taken by Andy Stinchcombe/Malcolm Young (Ford Sierra Sapphire), the crew having won the rally outright in 1989. Similarly the Novice award went to former international competitors Iain Freestone/Preston Ayres (Peugeot 205).
