VK Derbyshire Rally 2004

Sponsored by VK Vodka Kick

Matlock Motor Club

3rd/4th April 2004

Clerk of the Course: Charlie Wheeldon

Route: 145 Miles

Maps: 119

Starters: 60

Winners: Carl Hawkins/Steve Coupland (Mitsubishi Lancer E3)

Carl Hawkins debuted his newly acquired Mitsubishi Lancer E3 on the VK Derbyshire Rally and, navigated by Steve Coupland, took his second successive victory on the Matlock event.

The rally used a 140 mile route in its traditional stamping ground of the Derbyshire Peak District. Heavy rain throughout the event made life difficult for both competitors and marshals. A number of crews became stuck on what are normally easily passable tracks.

All the sections in the first half were timed to the minute and three crew arrived at Petrol having dropped just two minutes. These competitors were, the eventual winners Hawkins/Coupland, Steve Webster/Roger Hage (Subaru Impreza) and Tim Tordoff/Ian Frazer (Peugeot 205 GTi). Owen Turner/Graham Raeburn (Rover Metro) were one minute behind in fourth place.

The timed to the second sections in the second half in the lanes between Matlock and Clay Cross provided a clear cut result. Hawkins/Coupland pulled out a comfortable lead of 1m 18s by the Finish, while Tordoff/Frazer narrowly beat Webster/Hage to second place by two seconds.

Guy Robinson/Gary Evans had a short event, the engine of their Proton Persona expired in a cloud of smoke near Unthank on the first section.

Terry Martin/Paul Taylor (Peugeot 205 GTi) lost out on a top ten placing after picking up a fail for making up more time than allowed in a transport section.

Stan Featherstone/Mike Ogram (Ford Sierra) lost 30 minutes after getting lost and then stuck. They finished and were classied in 33rd position. Paul Wright/Malcolm Barber finished one place in front after a similar experience.

The leading novice crew were Simon Banham/James Savage (Peugeot 205 GTi) in twelfth place, while the poorly supported Historic Rally, which had just four starters, was won by James Carter/Jonathan Stockdale (Ford EScort).
