Rali Gogledd Cymru 2002

A fast and consistent pace saw Howard Price/Carl Williamson take the win on the Rali Gogledd Cymru. The Rhyl & District MC event, a round of the North Western Road Rally Championship, used a compact 140 mile route in central North Wales.

Martin Lloyd/Steve Herbert led initially but fell back to take seventh place at the Finish. John Leckie/John Madoc-Jones then took their Subaru Impreza Estate to the front of the field, however a wrong slot soon after the petrol halt meant that they fell to fifth, although they did take the Standard Production Award.

Price/Williamson, competing in their immaculately prepared Corolla, never put a foot wrong all night and they finished over a minute clear of North Western Championship rivals Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie (Vauxhall Nova). Third to sixth places were covered by just six seconds, the places being taken by Malcolm Acott/Steve Griffiths, Kevin Parry/Gareth Price, Leckie/Madoc-Jones and Stuart Newby/Paul Holmberg.

There were two leading retirements. Michael Pedley/David Pedley withdrew at Petrol with engine maladies on their Escort, while Brian Harrison/Cliff Washbrook put their Escort off the road.

Kev Ikin/Rob Jones struggled with an ill handling Escort throughout the rally, but came home in ninth place. Neil Bye/Stephen Bye finished in 19th after being slowed by navigator illness.

The leading Semi-Experts were Medwyn Jones/Brian Stubbs in a Sunbeam and the Novice class was won by Gareth Clarke/Shaun Baker in a Peugeot 309.

Phil Matthews/Ian Murray made the long journey from Aberdeen to North Wales to compete on the Gogledd and made it to the Finish in their Peugeot 309.

The Wessex Motor Club pairing of Paul Swindells/Zip Zerihan also made a trek to the Gogledd, but were less fortunate; they retired their Peugeot 309 before Petrol.
