Mel Harries Memorial Rally 1997

Having taken his first ever rally victory two weeks previously on the Witches Brew, Toby Adams made it two in a row as he and navigator Nigel Nelson won the Mel Harris Memorial Rally in South Wales. The Ammanford MC event, postponed from its original September date, used a 90 mile route split into four sections with a 'pre-plot' format.

Gareth Lloyd/Dorian Evans were the crew with least time penalties at the end but picked up a fail after missing to get a signature for the code board at PC37. The same control also cost newly crowned Welsh Champions Baron Glaze/Pete Davies a top place finish as they missed it completely.

Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson were another crew to fall foul of missing signatures as they picked up four fails and lost second place in the process. Alyson Acreman/Byron Jones were one of the few retirements as they crashed their Nova just before the petrol halt.

Adams/Nelson brought their Mk1 Escort home just 20 seconds ahead of the Chevette of Clive Greves/Rob Duke. While Adrian Davies/Mark Jones were third overall to take the Semi-Expert award. The Standard Production Award went to the ninth placed Cavalier SRi of Wyn Jones/Hefin Owens. There were 34 finishers from the 47 starters.
