Morning Mist Rally 2002

Despite drowning out in a ford, Guy Robinson/Charlie Wheeldon managed to win the Morning Mist Road Rally on a tie break.

The Loughborought MC organised rally, an East Midlands Championship round, started from the event's sponsor Archie Moss' Vauxhall dealership at Coalville and finished at Shearsby.

Robinson/Wheeldon had opened up a lead of a minute when their Nova ingested water into its air intake at a ford towards the end of the rally. The car recovered but the time lost meant that they finished on equal penalties with the Impreza of John Haden/Steve Coupland. The matter was resolved by reference to the tie decider clock which were timed to the second. Robinson/Wheeldon had cleaned the critical sections, while Haden/Coupland had dropped 35 seconds.

Top seeds Andy Baker/Lee Burgess were a minute behind in third, while Jamie Turner/Graham Raeburn were a further minute back in fourth.

Ben Williams/Richard Booth were fifth and took the standard production award in their Renault Clio. The leading novices were Adam Gardner/Andy Lewin who were sixth overall and were also the first Loughborough MC crew home. Peter Noad/Peter Cox once again took a Historic category win in their Audi 80.

Three leading crews, Tim Tordoff/Ian Frazer, Stephen Webster/Robert Duck and Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell were all excluded for give way infringements. Jason Birks/Christopher White managed to invert their Cavalier, an incident that put them out of the event.
