Stages: 6 (45 Gravel Stage Miles)
Venue: Crychan, Cefn Llwydlo & Esgair Dafydd
Starters: 78
Winners: Julian Reynold/Ieuan Thomas (Subaru Impreza)
Julian Reynolds/Ieuan Thomas (Subaru Impreza) won Amman & District MC's Red Kite stages after Mick Jones/Andy Morgan (Mitsubishi Lancer E3), who had led from the start, crashed out on the last stage.
Notably eleven cars failed scrutineering at the first attempt due to seat belts that didn't comply with FIA rulings, all managed to get the matter sorted and sixty-five cars took the start. They were to face treacherously icy conditions on the stages. Six tests had been planned, taking in two loops of three stages - Crychan, Cefn Llwydlo and Esgair Dafydd. The latter, once polished by the first few cars, proved to be virtually impassable and the second visit was cancelled.
Jones/Morgan were 25 seconds faster than any other crew through the 11 miles of SS1. They took fastest time on the next three stages to enter the final test with a lead of 43 seconds. However with less than two miles remaining their Lancer E3 went off the road, the steering and suspension broke, taking with them the cam belt. Their rally was over.
Reynolds/Thomas were competing in Dorian Rees' Group N Subaru Impreza. They had a steady run through SS1, taking only fourth fastest time, as they got used to the car. They speeded up after that, matching Jones' fastest time on SS4 and were well placed to inherit the win on SS5.
The positions of the leading runners was remarkably static, Jones' retirement being the only alteration in the top thirteen places between SS2 and the Finish. Robert Swann/Derek Davies (Subaru Impreza) finished second, having fended off an early challenge from Richard Hill/Aled Davies (Mitsubishi Lancer E3). Hill was using the Red Kite as a test session and admitted to a few pirouettes in the icy conditions.
Ian Joel/Graeme Wood finished fifth having had a pipe blow off the EGR valve between the first two stages, it was fixed at the first service halt two stages later.
Damian Cole/Pail Willets were competing in Cole's older Impreza as his new Hyundai Accent WRC was still being built. He had considered withdrawing due to the icy conditions, but continued and finished in eighth place.
There were only two starters in Class 4 and after Edd Lloyd/Eric Tong had put their Triumph TR7 V8 off the road on SS1, Graham Davies/Gary Powell (Talbot Sunbeam) cantered to the category win.
Stuart Clarke/Cliff Simmonds were the fastest RWD crew throughout the day. They had a starter motor fail early on and rear brake worries later, which caused two offs on SS2, however they took the Class 3 win by over a minute. Battling in the same class, Geraint Mills/Jonny Evans (Opel Manta) suffered a stage maximum on SS3 after going off. Terry Brown/Martin Henry might have taken the class win but an off on SS1, a broken gear stick and a road penalty ruined their chances.
Mark Shane Gamble/George Gwynn (Peugeot 205) led Class 2 throughout the day and were only beaten on SS3 after a spin. They finished in 25th place overall.
Class 1 was taken by Grant Rees/Wyn Davies (Suzuki Swift), who finished over three minutes ahead of their nearest class rivals, although they were mystified by having been given a ten second road penalty. Richard Sykes/Simon Taylor (Peugeot 106) struggled throughout the event with low fuel pressure which meant that they had a maximum speed of only 60mph.
Francis McDonnell/Lee Massey (Subaru Impreza) broke a driveshaft at Junction 2 on SS1 and, when the diff controller didn't work, they were stranded. Dave Brick/Rob Woodhouse also failed to make the end of SS1 after the engine on their Escort failed. Dai Lloyd/Shaun Price tore off the rear end of their Fiesta on SS1 and went no further.
Matt Owen/Ross Butler (Subaru Impreza) were seventh quickest on SS1, but were then involved in a road traffic accident on the following section; the damage was to great for them to continue. Also out on the road between SS1 and SS2 was the MG ZR of Huw Evans Jones/Glenn Latham; it had the gearbox fail.
Jason Pritchard was making his debut in a S1600 Peugeot 106 and, with Martin Jones co-driving, finished fourth in Class 2.
