Winners: Stan Featherstone/Mike Ogram (Peugeot 205)
There was a short but sharp first half to the Shaw Trophy, with successive four minute sections, however five crews remained clean of penalties at Petrol. Terry Martin/Jerry Hettrick (Peugeot 205 GTi) weren't amongst these as they had suffered an excursion into the scenery and had to receive a tow from Paul Schatz/Richard Todd (Peugeot 205) to get them out; they continued and finished in eleventh place.
Three cars pulled clear of the field on the first regularity of the night, which was immediately after the break. Stan Featherstone/Mike Ogram (Peugeot 205) took the lead here. Jon Lawson/Chris Pringle (Vauxhall Nova), the 2002 Shaw Trophy winners, were competing on their first event in two years, and were now in second, with Dan Willan/Paul Allen (Vauxhall Astra) in third. Allen was a late call up for the event as Willan's regular navigator, Heather Grisedale, was taken ill shortly before the rally. All these three top crews were within 15 seconds of each other at this point.
Featherstone/Ogram dropped a minute on the penultimate section; this put Willan/Allen into a 45 second lead.
The matter would be decided on the final section, a 10 mile run through Harwood Forest. Featherstone/Ogram stormed through the woods, catching and passing Willan/Allen. This gave the Peugeot pair the win by just sveen seconds. Lawson/Pringle were ten seconds further back in third place. There was then an over two minute gap to Adrian Green/Mike Fern, who had been clean at Petrol, they ended up in fourth place.
Despite losing out on the win, Willan/Allen took the Non-Expert Class Award, finishing seventeen minutes ahead of their nearest category rival.
Although they'd stopped to rescue the stricken Peugeot of Martin/Hettrick in the first half, Schatz/Todd were on track to claim a top five finish when they picked up a puncture in Harwood and drove on the deflated tyre to the end; they lost two minutes and finished in seventh place.
Bill Chadwick/Alan Edwards (Peugeot 205), who finished in eighth, and Kris Coombes/Steve Coombes (Peugeot 309), who were tenth, both had time consuming wrong slots in the first half.
Andy Whittaker/Charlie Tynan (Subaru Legacy Estate) won the Clubmans Rally which was the first round of the Tyneside Motor Group Championship.
