Michael Harrison/Ian Jarman won the Starlight Novices Road Rally. The pair broke clear of the pack in the Shropshire lanes to win by 40 seconds at the end of the 100 mile event. There was a close battle for second with three crews covered by just six seconds. At the end it was John Powell/Matt Barker who took the runner up spot, with Andrew Rumble/Martin Cresswell third and Nick and Annelli Bloxham, on the navigators first event, fourth.
Shane Richards/Jon Madoc-Jones were fifth and were the first Novice crew home despite their Sierra suffering from a sick engine. The top Beginners crew were Rick Traves/Chris Thomson who brought their Peugeot 309 into 16th overall.
Other crews had less luck - top seeds Trevor Pritchard/Paul Hughes went off on the very first section, they would still have finished in the top ten but picked up a fail late in the event. Dave Pitchford/Richard Askew lost 20 minutes when their Escort cut out and Andy Oakes/Dean George dropped out of the top ten after a couple of wrong slots. Mike Hart/Chris Hart and Craig Shuker/Greg Pearson both retired after their cars made contact with the scenery.
The final control of the night saw drama as four crews - Michael Bishop/Steve Bishop, Gary Jecketts/Paul Vass, Nick Onions/Chris Lightburn and Paul Harris/Paul Stocking - were excluded for give way offences.
Despite the fact that the event was not open to Expert crews the Starlight attracted 47 starters of whom 32 made the finish
