Top seeds Mike Roberts/Dai Roberts justified their start position by finishing first on Gwendraeth Valley MC’s Welsh Dragon Tyres Novices Rally.
The event used a route of just under 100 miles in the lanes south of Carmarthen and, despite Expert crews not being eligible, attracted a maximum entry of 60 cars.
Manfred Kampshulte/Aled Richards and Jason Sugden/Darren Beynon had been tying for the lead of the event, both being clean of penalties when they collided at a control. Neither car could continue - Sugden/Beynon’s Escort sustained damage to a door, while the similar car of Kampshulte/Richards holed a radiator.
The demise of these two crews allowed Roberts/Roberts to take the win, finishing a minute ahead of Robert Mangano/Steve Weston. The latter crew had headed the winners at the midway point but then lost time on the last two sections.
The top two Novice crews finished in third and fourth these were Iwan Williams/Heulyn Phillips and Ian Lewis/Richard Jones. These two pairings had been in close contention all night, although Williams/Phillips always had the upper hand.
The clear winners of the Beginners class were Andrew Mead/Wyn Griffiths, who brought their Mini into eighth place overall. They were almost two and half minutes ahead of their nearest class challengers
A vital section had to be scrubbed after a joy rider, who had no connection with the rally, crashed a car blocking the route after fifteen competitors had passed. A quick re-route ensured that the event was largely unaffected other than for the loss of the section.
