The Winter Rally 2000

North Wales Car Club

15th/16th January 2000

Clerk of the Course: Jon Madoc-Jones

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 116

Starters: 37

Winners: Terry Wilson/Phil Harrison (Ford Sierra)

After an almost twenty year layoff Terry Wilson/Phil Harrison made a triumphant return to road rallying when they took their Ford Sierra to victory on North Wales CC's Winter Rally.

The Winter Rally 2000

The 130 mile event, Round One of the North Western Championship, used a straight forward format on Map 116, this included some of the icy roads in the Clocaenog area. The well received event used a series of standard sections, with one regularity that was the tie breaker test.

Apart from Wilson/Harrison the rally was an unhappy affair for other top crews. Top seeds Kev Parry/Gareth Price booked in early to a control in the second half, while Jason Stone/Daniel Stone and Jason Hardy/Alan Jones both picked up fails at the second passage control. Hardy/Jones retired later with a severe misfire on their VW Golf.

Tudor Morris/Gerrallt Davies went off the road after just two miles, they carried on but clutch failure stopped their Escort at Petrol. Dave Jones/Pete Forrester and Neil Bye/Stephen Bye disappeared from the event early in the second half.

Despite a misfire John Leckie/Baz Green were fastest by almost a minute over the regularity section and looked to be heading for a win when a broken coil on their Sunbeam Lotus ended their rally. Their misfortune allowed Smith/Harrison through for the win, although Malcolm Alcott/Paul Green were only three second behind them in second place.

The only other crew within touch of the leaders were Darren Herring/Paul Holmberg, who brought their Subaru Impreza home in third.

Tony Watkins/Medwyn Evans were the leading Semi-Experts, coming home in eleventh place, the last runners clear of fails. Chris Rowlands/David Evans were the fastest Class 2 crew and would have finished fifth overall, but picked up a fail at a triangle control. Russell Goodwin/Dave Thomas were the leading Novices at nineteenth overall.
