For 2006 Aberystwyth & District Motor Club upgraded the Ystwyth Rally to National B status and opened the entry to Expert crews; it having been a novice event previously. Despite not being in any championships it attracted 70 starters, a few non-starters depriving the organisers of a capacity entry.

The Ystwyth conformed to the standard format for the time, using regularities, but with the location of Intermediate Time Controls being identified by being located at the same point as Vias, which were listed, and numbered, on the route card. This practice had come in to use when the more restrictive rules on Standard Sections had been introduced by the MSA.

The opening regularity started just outside Talybont at Penysarnddu and ran northwards to the first ITC at Cefngweiriog.

The Astra of Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins had developed clutch problems on the run out, but this had cleared and the pair were fastest to RITC2, five seconds ahead of Steve Wood/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra). Roger Harris/David Manning (Vauxhall Astra) were third quickest, seven seconds behind O'Connor/Collins.

Some crews were already in trouble, most notably, John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra), who started at Car 2, they were out before RITC2 as a head gasket failed. Sean Crowley/Deian Rees put their Vauxhall Astra off the road after less than a mile; the resultant broken steering stopped them going any further.

The regularity continued on tracks through Llwyngwyn and Cwm Einion to RITC3. Despite the rough going, five cars made the control on time, these included the top two Astras and also Kev Bolver/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort), who moved into third place as Harris/Manning dropped 18 seconds.

The Passage Control that followed RITC3 caused difficulties for some who missed to find it, these included Harris/Manning and Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Dale Furniss (VW Golf GTi).

O'Connor/Collins lost the lead as they missed some slots, they lost two minutes to their rivals at RITC4; they lost a further four minutes at IRTC5 after suffering a puncture. Bolver/Jones were fastest to IRTC4, which was near Furnace, and took the lead; they were now ten seconds ahead of Wood/Richards; Mark 'GT' Roberts/Steve Herbert (VW Golf GTi) were in third 21 seconds off the lead.

The Renault 5 Monaco of Gary Robbins/Daniel Thomas retired at RITC4 with a broken engine mount.

After a relaxed run up the A487, the regularity ended with a loop from Gelligoch to the outskirts of Machynlleth, which was where RITC6 was situated. Roberts/Herbert took the lead here, ending the section 29 seconds ahead of Wood/Richards. Behind them, the 2005 Ystwyth winners, Wayne Edwards/Sharon Jarvis (Toyota MR2) had moved into third place, almost a minute and a half off the lead, but 27 seconds ahead of Bolver/Jones.

After a non-competitive section through Machynlleth the second regularity started at Forge, with the first ITC being after a run through Blaen-pant. Roberts/Herbert extended their lead at RITC8 to 42 seconds, while Edwards/Jarvis put in the best time of any crew and moved to within a minute of Wood/Richards. However the Toyota pair were the only one of the leading crews to drop time at RITC9, which was timed to the minute; the minute here meant that they fell to fourth, 19 seconds behind Bolver/Jones.

RITC10 was just before Talywern and it saw Roberts/Herbert pull clear of their chasers, they now had a lead of 4m02s over Edwards/Jarvis, while Wood/Richards were now 14 seconds further back in third. On time, Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Dale Furniss should have been in first place, but, by now, they had missed two PCs and so had two fails on their total.

The fast road to Bontdolgadfan ended the section and most were clean at RF11, however O'Connor/Collins added to their woes by booking in a minute early, adding two minutes to their penalties.

Ystwyth Road Rally 2006

A Transport Section through Staylittle allowed crews to make up four minutes of any lost time before the next regularity started just north of the Hafren Forest. Wood/Richards took advantage of the break to change the Astra’s spark plugs in a successful attempt to clear a misfire that had troubled them for most of the rally.

The run down through the forest and Old Hall didn’t cause any problems for most crews, although all lost time on the road through Castellgreido to the finish control just off the A44.

Of the leaders, with their engine running cleanly, Wood/Richards were best here, passing Edwards/Jarvis for second place; this put the Astra three seconds ahead of the Toyota, but they were still 3m52s behind the leading Golf.

The regularity continued with a run along the main Aberystwyth road to the entrance to Sweet Lamb where there were four ITCs and 12 PCs to be tackled in the tracks of the rally complex; the section ended at Eisteddfa Gurig.

It was an eventful section. Firstly, Edwards/Jarvis missed the first PC plus one later on, putting them out of the running. Then Wood/Richards went off and lost over a minute to Roberts/Herbert. Kevin 'KJ' Jones/Dilwyn John also put their Sierra 4x4 off the road, but in their case a solid rock meant that they went no further.

For those that survived Sweet Lamb, petrol was taken at Ponterwyd, where Roberts/Herbert held a lead of 5m12s over Wood/Richards. In third place at Petrol were Gethin Morgan/Dalis Ifans (Ford Escort), who were 15 seconds behind Wood/Richards and 11 in front of Bolver/Jones. Roberts/Furniss, who, on time, would have been 13 seconds behind the leaders, had missed two further PCs in Sweet Lamb.

The competition restarted with a run up to and around Pendam, including the mines track; in general the second half was less demanding than the first. This was immaterial to the leaders as the engine on their Golf went sick soon after the restart and from holding a substantial lead Roberts/Herbert were out.

Morgan/Dafis took the lead on the Pendam mine tracks; they were 30 seconds faster than Wood/Richards and 27 quicker than Bolver/Jones. The regularity finished near Bow Street, where the leading crews were clean.

The action then moved to Nany-yr-Moch, where the section was run from Talybont to Ponterwyd. Disaster struck for Morgan/Dafis when they went off the road; they lost three minutes and the lead as their rivals were clean at the following ITC. Of the leaders Wood/Richards were quickest, taking 40 seconds off Bolver/Jones; this gave the Astra pair a lead of just over a minute, while Morgan/Dafis were in third, but almost three minutes off the lead.

The route finished by looping through Devil's Bridge, Cwmystwyth and Aberffrwd. Wood/Richards cleaned all six time controls on the section and came home with a victory margin of just under two minutes. Morgan/Dafis cut their deficit to Bolver/Jones, but were still over two minutes off the runner up spot at the Finish.

Arwel Thomas/Ceri Hughes (Vauxhall Nova) finished in tenth place overall and took the Semi-Expert Award, finishing a minute and one place in front of class rivals Simon Naughton/Gareth Thomas (Rover 200). None of the Novices ended the event without a fail and it was Chris Ellis-Jones/Phillip Griffiths (Ford Escort) who took the category win with four fails.

It had been a tough event, only twelve crews managed to finish without a fail, and thirty crews had fallen by the wayside.
