MID WALES STAGES
Icelander Daniel Sigurdarsson, partnered for the first time by Andrew Sankey, simply dominated the Rally Marketing Mid Wales Stages, the pair finished over a minute ahead of their nearest rivals.
Despite a couple of near misses with some ditches, they took fastest time on four of the event’s five stages on their way to victory. Initially their nearest challenger was the Escort RS of Nick Elliott/Dave Price. This crew set some stunning times during the day, not only by putting a two wheel drive car in amongst the 4WD brigade but also by the fact that they largely drive on sight without the aid of pace notes. They eventually finished third, behind Dan Humphreys/Ian Pryce, who make a habit of finishing as runners up on their local events.
Ian Joel/Graeme Wood seemed to be about to make a challenge for the lead as they took fastest time on the second stage, however their Escort Cosworth broke a shaft on the next stage and they were out.
There was a three way battle for the lead of the 205 Challenge until Dan Corner/James Greenwood, in a charge over Sweet Lamb that impressed a spectating Ryan Champion, pulled clear to take the category win. The BMW RWD Challenge saw a close tussle between Ciro Carannante/Tim Young and Toni Carannante/Ella Flynn, until the later hit the water splash at Sweet Lamb and had the engine cut out.
Joe Price set sixth fastest time on the first stage but rolled his Escort heavily on the next test in Hafren North. Geraint Mills/Jonny Evans debuted their newly built Manta but went out when they hit a rock and broke a ball joint in Myherin.Elfyn Evans took up a late entry and finished tenth overall and third in the highly competitive Class 3 in his Fiesta ST.
