Clerk of the Course: John Rees
Route: 120 Miles
Maps: 135 & 146
Starters: 65
Winners: Kevin Morgan/Dai Richards (Ford Escort)
A start number of 13 proved to be lucky for Kevin Morgan/Dai Richards as they drove to victory on the Cambrian Road Rally.
The outcome of the event was decided in the second half on the infamous “Wooden Bridge” road, a hazardous route made trickier by the frosty conditions. Gareth Evans/Marc Hughes had led up until this point but then lost over three minutes when they put their car on its side. They recovered to finish sixth.
Morgan/Richards blasted through the vital section, which was on their home ground, and moved from sixth at Petrol to take a lead they weren’t to lose. Islwyn Evans/Dorian Evans took second, a position they’d held at the halfway point, finishing just six seconds behind the winners.
Richard Rees/Michael Gilbey finished third, 40 seconds down, just ahead of John Davies/Edryd Evans who survived a number of mechanical problems including the loss of their spotlights.
