Phew! Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Dylan Jenkins beat Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes by just one second to win the 1000 Lanes Road Rally. Not only was this the battle for the rally victory but it was also struggle for supremacy in the Welsh Championship.
Roberts/Jenkins could have secured the series with a maximum score on the 1000 Lanes, but the title would only be theirs if Roberts/Hughes didn’t finish second. The latter crew managed to achieve this and so the Championship will not be decided until the final round, the Powys Lanes, in four week’s time.
Roberts/Hughes started the event late as their Golf developed a fuel pump problem on the start line. Eventually, having ‘hot-wired’ the unit, they set off and managed to take and hold the lead until the final section. However at the last control Roberts/Jenkins beat them by 42 seconds to just nose in front by that vital second.
Craig Judd/Russell Williams were the only crew within spitting distance of the battling cousins; they finished a minute and a half down at the end.
Richard Jerman/Lowri Davies continued their appalling run of luck; they went out, having led the Golfs briefly, before the petrol halt. Also on the retirement list were Andy Davies/Lee Taylor whose Impreza developed fatal transmission problems as they started the first section of the rally. Meanwhile Steve Davies/Dale Bowen withdrew after picking up a fail.
