Winners: Kevin Willis/Liam Burns (Peugeot 206)
Kevin Willis/Liam Burns started their campaign to win the South Western Championship in the best possible style by taking a dominant win on the Carvers Traders Rally.
The event, a virtually non-stop affair, proved to be a testing experience for both crew members; weather conditions weren’t good and there were numerous triangle controls to find and negotiate.
Willis/Burns held a slender one second lead at the one-third mark from Phil Luxton/Alex Giles-Townsend, however the latter’s challenge ended when something in their Astra’s drive chain failed.
Roger Holder/Peter Barnard then took up the chase. They were 50 seconds down on the leaders at Petrol but then had a disastrous second half when they had a major wrong slot and ended by cutting route to get to the Finish.
The leaders had a scare late on when they lost time beached on a triangle despite this they romped home to win by almost six minutes.
The Semi-Expert crew of David Thorpe/Andy Lowe took the runner up spot. Dave Whittock/Ross Whittock might have taken that position but they were another crew to get stuck on a triangle; they lost seven minutes as a result.
Gavin Rogers/Georgina Clark had been expected to do well but retired on the first section.
