With the cancellation of the Malcolm Wilson Stages, Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club were left with an unused forestry allocation for Greystoke Forest, to make use of it a Targa within the woods was organised.
The club had laid out six long tests, utilising the whole of Greystoke. Fifty-nine crews took the start on a bright but cool morning. They were split between an Interclub event, which was a round of the BTRDA Gold Star series, and a Club Rally.
The opening test was eight and a half miles in length and the top five seeds all beat the bogey, however Tom Williams/Gary Evans (Ford Escort) added ten seconds to their total as they were penalised for hitting a cone, while Christian Parker/Molly Livermore (Subaru Impreza) had two cone penalties imposed. This left Ethan Davies/Max Freeman (Ford Puma), Trevor Disney/Paul Nelson (Ford Fiesta ST150) and Adrian White/Ellen White (BMW 318Ti) sharing the lead on the bogey time.
Test Faults were to have an important effect on the results as the penalty for digressing from the correct route in any way, including going the wrong side of a cone, was a test maximum - with the long tests, these were significant.
Three cars failed to complete the test, these included Matt Flynn/Rob Bryn Jones, who had the clutch fail on their Proton Satria. John Livermore/Bob Hargreaves picked up a puncture and this pulled their Chrysler Avenger into one of Greystoke's deep and unforgiving ditches.
With additional secret checks added to Test 2, which was a repeat of Test 1, all crews dropped time. Williams/Evans were fastest and this pulled them up to second place behind Davies/Freeman. The two crews were separated by five seconds, with Kevin Stones/Chris Holden (Toyota MR2) now in third, 29 seconds off the lead. For the second test in succession Parker/Livermore received two cone faults, however they were still in the fight as they were now in fourth place.
Their position was helped by the fact that two of the crews that had beaten the bogey on Test 1, were in trouble on Test 2. White/White were penalised for an incorrect manoeuvre, which gave them a maximum, this was almost twenty minutes greater than the fastest time; they fell to twentieth in the Interclub event. Disney/Nelson now shared that position with them as they took a maximum as well after their 206 suffered a smashed oil filter; they fixed the problem, and rejoined in time for Test 3.
Test 3 and 4 used the same layout, a seven mile test, missing out the western forest loop. It was to have a major effect on the results. Firstly, the leaders, Davies/Freeman, came to a halt with a broken driveshaft, while Williams/Evans received a test maximum for taking the incorrect route through a series of cones; they fell to 17th position.
Parker/Livermore took fastest time on the test and this put them into a 19 second lead, ahead of Stones/Holden. Mark Slatcher/Alistair Leggett (MG ZR) were in third, having avoided any test faults so far. Disney/Holden had got their Peugeot fixed and took second fastest time on Test 3.
The Club Rally had been led from Test 1 by Matthew Hewlett/Jennifer Milne (Peugeot 106); after Test 3 they held an advantage of over a minute from second placed Philip Hodgson/Lewis Hodgson (Mazda MX5).
The top three places remained unchanged after Test 4. Parker/Livermore were fastest once again, this extended their lead to 55 seconds, while Slatcher/Leggett closed to within 19 seconds of second place, Stones/Holden having received a cone fault. Meanwhile James Hall/Tim Sawyer (MG ZR) moved past Steve Head/Miles Fieldhouse (Mini Adventure) for fourth place.
The test saw the demise of the BMW of White/White, when the car's diff exploded. Jack Willan/Archie Graves suffered a broken wheel bearing on their Proton Satria; this was to affect the running of the event - the car had to be moved to clear the track and it took some time to accomplish this. The result was that Test 5 would be the final one, as there wasn't time to run Test 6 within full daylight.
With the fourth fastest time on Test 5, Parker/Livermore came home to secure a 59 second win. Slatcher/Leggett were third quickest on the test, but they were still nine seconds short of denying Stones/Holden the runner up spot. Hall/Sawyer finished in a clear fourth place after Head/Fieldhouse failed to reach the finish, their Mini's gearbox having failed.
Hewlett/Milne continued their domination of the Club Rally, leading from Start to Finish, ending over two minutes ahead of second placed Geoff Hall/Paul Bosdet (Vauxhall Nova Sport).
David Mosey/Louise Richardson had encountered driveshaft problems on their Vauxhall Corsa on Test 1, but drove comparatively slowly through the remaining tests as they only had to be classified as finishers to secure the BTRDA Gold Star Championship. They achieved this, ending in 21st position.
