The eighth running of the Trac Mon Targa was run in sunny weather throughout. The organisers had laid out fourteen tests, all with intricate sections, which meant that both crew members had to be attentive throughout. In total there would be 20 miles of competitive action. Sponsorship once again came from Cefni Garage, who were actively involved in the running of the event. The event was a round of the BTRDA Silver Star Championship.
The first twelve tests were run in batches of four, with cars returning to the pit lane between the sessions. Two longer tests, run back to back, completed the day's sport.
The complex route, as usual on the Trac Mon Targa, led to a large number of test faults being recorded. There were also penalties for putting two wheels on to the grass that surrounded the circuit, which added to the demands. In total 143 faults were recorded during the day.
Alun Pierce Jones/Alun Hayward (Ford Escort) were fastest on Test 1, but a cone fault added ten seconds to their total, so they were only in fourth place after the test. It was Rhys Williams/Dylan Richards (BMW E36) who led by two seconds from Robi Wood/Harvey Roberts (Ford Escort) after the test.
Pierce Jones/Hayward were fastest through Tests 2, 3 and 4, however a second cone fault on Test 3, meant that at the first halt they were two seconds behind Williams/Richards, who remained in the lead. The father and son pairing of Chris Farrell/Cian Farrell (Ford Escort) were in third place at this point. They had contested the Drystone Rally overnight, where they had finished in second place. They had then dashed from Derbyshire to Anglesey to take the start at Trac Mon.
Neil Jones/Aled Jones (Mazda MX5) were in fifth position after incurring a missed manoeuvre on the opening test, this added 30 seconds to their total penalties, without this they would have held a ten second lead. It was to be the only fault that they collected all day.
A number of crews failed to make the end of the opening test, these included Gwyndaf Roberts/Jill Harris, who had been given the Best Presented Car Award at the Start, their Nova suffered a broken driveshaft before the first Passage Control.
Tests 5 to 8 were a repeat of the first set of four. Pierce Jones/Hayward took fastest time and the lead on Test 6 and returned to the pit lane after Test 8 with a 19 second advantage over the field, which, by that point, was led by Jones/Jones, although they had Farrell/Farrell just a second behind.
Farrell/Farrell took the position from Jones/Jones on Test 9, but then fell to fourth after they missed a manoeuvre on Test 11. However, they moved back up to third on Test 12, as they edged past Williams/Richard to be one second in front. Ahead of this battle, Pierce Jones/Hayward had extended their lead to 14 seconds, while Jones/Jones were 30 seconds in front of Farrell/Farrell. In fifth place, Wood/Roberts were five seconds off fourth.
The final two tests were identical and were three and a half miles long. There was no holding control between the two tests, so the top cars were tackling Test 14, while the lower runners were on Test 13.
There were a number of tighter corners on this final layout and this led to an increased number of grass penalties. The top seeds, Sion Jones/Kevin Kerr (Peugeot 206 GTi) had been in sixth place after Test 12, but, having collected four grass penalties, fell to ninth by the Finish.
The top four places remained the same over this last section, although Jones/Jones closed to within two seconds of Pierce Jones/Hayward at the Finish. Farrell/Farrell pulled clear of Williams/Richards, who picked up a grass fault on Test 13.
Robert Milligan/Jo Lisa Hayes (Austin Mini) had a steady rise through the top ten over the later tests and came home in fifth place, gaining a useful haul of BTRDA Silver Star Championship points.
Jack Mills/Katie Williams (Nissan Micra) had led the Club Rally from Test 1 and held a lead in that category of 38 seconds after Test 16. Unfortunately, they came to a halt with a failed engine on Test 14. The Club section was therefore won by the Novice crew of Alyn Roberts/Tom Beaumond (Vauxhall Astra), who had completed the whole event without incurring any test faults.
