Winners: Chris Elkins/Mark Appleton (Citroen AX GTi)
Chris Elkins/Mark Appleton took a narrow win on Bath MC’s Festival Rally; they finished just six seconds ahead of Owen Turner/Bob Blows. For Elkins it was his second win in three years on the Festival.
The event opened with seven tests, these were followed by two plot ‘n bash Regularity Sections; crews then embarked on 100 miles of Standard Sections.
The battle of victory was decided on the first two disciplines as many of the top crews cleaned the Standard Sections.
Elkins/Appleton led after the fourth test but Turner/Blows took the lead after the fifth. Despite being baulked on the last test Turner/Blows retained the lead until the final Regularity control where they picked up 20 seconds more penalties than Elkins/Appleton. The latter crew survived concerns as their Citroen’s alternator light flashed on for lengthy periods to take the win.
James How/Nic Jones round off the top three dropping a minute as their MG lost its lighting at one point.
The leading Semi-Experts, Jonathan Stimpson/Ian Graham, were as high as fourth at one point but fell back to eighth at the Finish; however they were still clear class winners.
The recent wet weather in the area accounted for two retirements; Freddy Camp/Peter Blackett and Andy Turner/Owen Dodd. They both fell victim to the same ford where they drowned out and their engines ingested water. Mark Lennox/Ian Beamond had been expected to go well in their venerable Anglia but they went OTL at Petrol after becoming stuck on a forest track.
